hi,

I am considering buying Two LP160 and vagabond portable power unit but I am not sure if the vagabond will work with the LP160. Can some shed some light on this please.

They wouldnt work at all. That flash is powered by AA's. The vagabond is an a power supply for AC flashes.

I gotta say, those flashes dont strike me as a very good value. They are powerful, but at that price you are within spitting distance of the calumet genesis or some other legit studio strobes. On the other hand if you want the benefits of hotshoe flashes you can easily equal the power of these by combining the YN units and still save money.

I would like to be able to transport my lighting equipment fairly easily, besides IF I were to buy the calumet genesis I wouldn't have any money left for the power unit, which is a bummer.

The LP160 were recommended on the Strobist blog which is why I am looking at them, I have a YN560 and so far I am quite happy with it but I am apprehensive about buying any more units just in-case they turn out bad, then I will have to send them back all the way to china while paying for postage too.

You can buy the YN from amazon so the return doesnt have to go back to china. I just dont see the value in the LP units for what you get. They cost as much as used 430ex or 550's, but dont offer ETTL capability. As I mentioned above multiple YN's would be a better and more flexible option. And since you started this by asking about a vagabond I just assumed that you could afford the LP and a vagabond, which means you can probably afford a genesis and a vagabond. Dont be short sighted and buy a bad product when you within dollars of a good product.

like someone pointed out,, the LP doesn' t need an external power like the vagabond,,
I just wanted to make sure I wasn't confusing it for something else

my first strobe was the 580exII, then I got a an LP160 based also on the strobist site recomondation. Since then I've picked up a couple of YN's. I rarely use the LP except for backgrounds as a slave. the 580 and the YN's are used often.
while they dont' get great reviews on strobist, I think they are great, and the build quality has improved since their poor rating... I'd go with them over the LP 160, and have since getting the LP 160

I'm between the YN560, YN565, and LP160 right now. I'm leaning toward the LP160 purely for the fact that it has a miniphone port - I hate PC ports!

I realize that I can get an adapter, such as the one from Lon @ FlashZebra. If YN would just put in a flippin' miniphone port, I'd be all over it in a second.

It is likely the LP160 is far more reliable than the YN flash units.

Enjoy! Lon

i am selling my lp160 since i rarely use a third flash - i use my 580 and 565 more.

i just like the fact that i can wirelessly ettl with the 565 but if you just need a slave without fancy capabilities get the 560?

the lp160 is easy to use but it just feels 'fat' in the hands that's my itch about it haha.

Thanks for the sugeestions guys I really appreciate it.

One thing bEfore I decide to go for the YN 565, Is it good enough for professional use, I have seen many professionals use the lp160 but not many who use the YN.

Can you recommend any reliable sellers form amazon, thanks.

Can the YN 565 be used to fire the YN 560

The YN 560 does have an optical trigger built in. It will fire when it see another flash fire. "Sees" is the key word there. As with all optical triggers, the remote flash needs to see the other flash, either directly or reflected. When outside in bright light this becomes more of a problem. The optical trigger has two modes that can be used for flashes that are manual only and flashes with preflash.

As long as it is sold or fulfilled by Amazon, you are safe.

YN 565 EX going for 145 on amazon, Isn't that a little too much. I guess I will go with the 560 instead since I don't really need the ettl anyway.
