I've never ever heard this before. Kentucky and Virginia can't, by any stretch of the imagination, be considered New England. Perhaps some of our American posters would like to comment?

I'd only consider New England as the 6 states(colonies) previously posted, but I can see including the other states between those and the Mason Dixon line as those later became part of the British colonies. Virginia and Kentucky are both out side of either of those.
