I was kind of happy with this pick. I took the advice of previous posts, and went out with my flash. I see it as being properly exposed. Snow dark dog not easy.
What do you think? CC appreciated.

I have a pretty bright monitor so the snow looks pretty blown out to me but I think the dogs face needs a little more light .

Difficult to rescue this one, shame because it's a nice pose. The snow was overexposed yet the dog needed a bit more light, possibly may have done better with a little fill-in flash but that's always easy to see after the event.

I managed to rescue the snow a little bit and lighten up the dog by using layers and a mask, not great but I think a slight improvement.

Edit .... looking at it now it's been uploaded there seems to be a bit of odd colouring in the snow.

I don't mind the blown out snow at all, it's a beautiful photo of a beautiful dog. Blown out or not, it's still obvious that it's snow, and the effect of the very white background really shows off her/his colors. Nice capture!

I think I am going to have to get this monitor calibrated. And I wonder if I can have the same thing done for my eyes.:)

The first two are the best. For the third one the shadow areas on the dog have been obliterated. If number two looks good on your monitor (yes, the snow is blown out) then your monitor is pretty close.

Did you shoot RAW? If you did you can recover some of the blown highlights in ACR.
