My aunt just bought herself a little buddy; Joey, a Saint Bernard, is super cute (see cellphone shot below). I received a call today from my aunt that she would like some shots of her puppy before it gets too big (heck, Joey already is getting big). I don't have too much experience shooting pets.

I am free this Thursday for the shoot. It will be about 40 degrees F, with scattered showers. Our snow has melted and I was thinking of finding a dry(ish) field...figuring it might make a good photoshoot location. Any thoughts on backdrops?

Here is my equipment I plan on using:

Canon 1D Mark III (mainly, with 70-200)
Canon 7D

Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 IS v2 (probably use this)
Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 (would only use this on 7D)

550EX (will bring it, don't know if I'll use it)

Other lenses (macro, super-telephoto, wide-angle) won't be used.
No tripod. Dogs won't sit still long enough!

Okay, here's Joey...please help!

My two cents, I'd try indoor and out shooting. Plan on using servo as puppies hardly stay in open place unless napping. Not a fan of most on camera flash so I'd aim for natural light. Keep an eye on shutter speed to avoid excessive blur. Oh, and get down on your belly to his level. Least for some...

With those 2 body/lens combos, you should be fine. Bring treats and toys! Try to let the dog go off leash if the location allows, just makes for a much better photo.

Thanks guys!

Kevan--yes, I plan to get down to his eye-level for most shots. I'm not too gifted with flash settings and prefer natural lighting :)

Kuma--I agree...I'm definitely going to be shedding that leash. Just don't tell the park rangers on me!
