On the first image, I cannot tell where the background begins and his shirt ends. A bit of a rim light to separate the subjects from the background would really help I think.

I like them the way they are. To me the fact the black blends into the background puts the emphasis on the subject.

I was thinking the same thing. I like the blending in; if it was accidental, it was fortuitous.
