I haven't gotten much into bird photography given that I still haven't ponied up for a long enough lens, but I really like the 200mm f/2.8L II for up-close shots of relatively tame birds eating from my backyard feeder. This lens may not be long enough for hawks way off in the distance, but it does well from about 10 feet :)

The lens is a Canon 200mm f/2.8L USM II, and the body is a T2i (550d/Kiss X4).
