It's just extra bling for show. Awesome to look at up close, but painful for the mx techs that need to polish it all the time. Wish we had the polished look on AF2 when I flew that.

Oh very good! I'd never noticed it on AF1 before.

You flew AF2?! That is pretty awesome. Saw AF2 through my neck of the woods (external link) not too long ago actually.

Yes, 5 1/2 years, but before they had winglets. Those are cool shots on the link. SAM is the callsign when we carried less than the VP onboard. Had plenty of photos of it but my external hard drive broke. Need to see if I can get it fixed to get years worth of photos from it.

michelle obama just drove by after landing at Palm Beach international. We were wondering if she would be flying in air force 1, but evidently not!

Is the official designation "Air Force Two" when the VP is on board?

I had always heard that there's really no such thing as AF2.

AF1 is only AF1 when the President is on board. Otherwise, it's SAM 28000 or 29000 depending on the airframe.

Same for AF2. It's just a SAM callsign unless the VP is on board.

Theoretically, the President or VP could be on board the aircraft that I fly for a private company and it becomes AF1 or 2. The type of aircraft doesn't matter.

I'm aware of the status change but I was asking specifically about the callsign "Air Force Two" and whether or not it's legitimate.

Yes sir, you are absolutely correct, the callsign with the VP onboard the C-32 is Air Force 2. Whoever told you otherwise was mistaken, unless they were inferring when the First Lady, SECSTATE, SECDEF, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs or Senators or Reps were onboard. Yes, those are the top 5 we carried on the 757. Can't tell you the amount of times we got feedback (good and bad) on the radios when using that callsign

And back to your original post (just to get back on track), again, nice shots.

Great images Kemosabe. I was standing next to Jay when he was shooting AF1 on final. He switched between his MkIII+500L to his MkIV+70-200L and back to his MkIII+500L like Wyatt Earp slapping leather at the OK corral. Both of those lens+camera combos are big and heavy. To switch back and forth while AF1 motored by our position was no simple task.

For heck sakes, I was trying to avoid falling over while panning with my MkIV+100-400L :)

Well done Jay.

If he were on a civil aircraft it becomes Executive One.

Nice captures btw.
