you might not need the macro twin lite flash...but i think you'll need some sort of flash/bracket set-up...you're going to be stopped down quite a bit to get any DOF, which will give you really slow shutter speeds...look at lordV's macro set-up in the macro section if you want an idea of how to diffuse an external flash...

Can you use it? Yes, but not to the extent of what the lens can do. I had the MR-14 ring flash and thought it was great, or there are some more budget ways of going around it if you ask around ie: LordV. He's awesome! To take a picture at 3x-5X @ F11 or so no flash is close to mpossible.

Sure you can - it might however limit you more significantly with what you can and can't do.
With static subjects, provided you've solid ground and a solid tripod you can always use mirror lockup and then just take a slower shutter speed, letting your aperture reduce small and your ISO remain low.

Handholding its more tricky and you'll oft find, even with the aperture wide open, that you have to use higher and higher ISOs. This grows increasingly difficult as you increase the magnification since light is lost within the lens setup and the effective aperture reduces.

Like I said its not "essential" for certain situations, but most prefer the versatility that flash gives. You can always purchase the setup in two parts; and remember even a regular speedlite flash suchas as a 430 or 580EX2 when used with a suitable bracket, can give you more than enough quality light for work with the lens.

Tools of the trade: Canon 400D, Canon 7D, Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS L M2, Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 OS, Canon MPE 65mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro, Tamron 24-70mm f2.4, Sigma 70mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 8-16mm f4.5-5.6, Raynox DCR 250, loads of teleconverters and a flashy thingy too
