Really keen on getting the 17-55 f2.8, visited Ted's camera's yesterday and they said its not available in Australia yet?!?
Anyone in Australia have one?? if so, where'd you get it??
I know of a online place in Hong Kong that has one, but not sure about buying from there.
Also Ted's told me it could be a different video system, PAL instead of NTSC, is this true??

DSLR lenses have nothing to do with video standards (NTSC vs PAL). Completely irrelevant.

Your local Ted's is staffed by at least one incompetent person, it seems.

The 17-55 has been out for yonks, so I imagine Canon must have a distributor network in Oz to sell their products.

Go back to that store, or another camera dealer, and talk to someone else. Maybe that particular person was looking up a lens for a video camera? (Though I still don't see how there could be any connection to video standard...)

IMHO,

She was asking me what DSLR I had, so who knows! ahah
And I thought the PAL/NTSC would be controlled/done through the body itself, not the lens.

I'll have to try elsewhere..

The video mode from the camera is driven by the settings you select on the body - the lens is "just the glass for the light to go through".

Looking at the manual for the T1i that you have (because I was curious), your camera records at either 20 fps for FullHD (1920x1080) or 30fps.

You can output the video via HDMI in the recorded format/speed (not PAL or NTSC, because it is digital, and those older formats are analog-based).

If you output using the analog connection, you set the output mode to NTSC or PAL using the Camera setting via the menu.

So yeah, all body-related, not a lens issue.

Jb can order in for you. Just ask.

Also try camera house and/or Paxton.

+1 a lot of local grey marketers are just online stores for HK dealers (e.g DWI) , so the product comes from HK and has to go back to HK for warranty

Camarasdirect is local in Brisbane and the warranty claims only need to go back to Brisbane then they handle it from there, so it's a bit safer process. I've bought a heap from them with no issues
