No.

DSLR's use shutters for all still images, even in Live View mode. No shutter sound means no pictures.

If you want to take pictures silently, you need a different camera - such as a point and shoot that can operate quietly. (external link)

However, "silent" can mean many things. Cameras make many noises and some can be controlled while others can't. The shutter is just part of it.
On my T2i, there is the shutter sound, the mirror sound, and then a sound that I swear has to be added by software which sounds like film advancing although it may also be some kind of motor that resets the shutter. That is by far the loudest noise and I found it extremely annoying.

On my 7D it is actually very quiet. When you click, all you hear is the smack of the mirror and the click of the shutter.

There is also a "silent shooting mode" which uses Live View and locks the mirror up which eliminates the mirror sound leaving only a slight click of the shutter. While not truly "silent", it's pretty darned close.

I have read that the 60D has the same silent shooting mode so I would presume that it also doesn't make the film winding noise that is likely on your T3i since it was on my T2i. Other than that though, the post above is correct. You would need a camera that uses an "electronic shutter" vs a real physical shutter such as a point & shoot.

another factor of why I upgraded from my T3i to the 60D. I find the shutter sound so much better and quieter. T3i has a high pitched sound while 60D is more deeper not as noticeable.

Ummm...have I read this correctly?
You changed camera bodies because of the sound of the shutter...
Bizarre

No, it said it was *one* factor in the decision to upgrade, not the only reason. Might have been a pretty small reason too.

Turns out a gripped 7D + 622 + 580exII + 70-200 2.8 IS MK2 is BLOODY HEAVY! Who knew?!!

Still, I can't understand why the way a shutter sounds would even enter the equation when upgrading bodies.
Each to his own I suppose.

Ah, I still remember when I used to use the 400D. Always found myself jealous of those Nikon users with the nice "Krrichink" instead of a "Weeeeenk Chhhhck!". Well, ever since I've got the 60D, I'm more than satisfied. :D

Not to sound a noob, but to me the shutter sound does find a place on my general determination of "how good" a camera is. I don't know much about the types of motors used to move the shutter, but the ones that make the whining noises feel (sounds like a brushed ferrite motor) as if it takes a long time to complete taking the photo, although it may be the same 1/200s. On the other hand the ones used in the 60D/7D and above, upon close examination, don't make any sounds, and the "Krrichink" is only from the mirror coming up and down.

Although the OP said it was only one of the reasons they upgraded, I wouldn't call it bizarre. If i picked up two cameras identical in every respect except that one sounded like my 7D and the other like the T2i, I wouldn't hesitate to spend an extra $50 or so just to have the less annoying version. It really is a loud and obnoxious noise compared to the XXD and XD models and I really do think that Canon does this on purpose to help push people on the upgrade path.

I liked the shutter sound much better on my XTi than on the T3i.

I was recently shocked when I tested out a 5DMkII and hit the shutter release to heard a "shhh-kikh" whereas when the hammer is dropped in my 1Ds Mk1... the birds take flight for miles around me. lol

Didn't realize it was so loud! Even the 450D was louder than the 5DMkII. (to my ears)

lol...after shooting with my 1D3 for over a year, I thought my 5Dc was broken when I took the first pictures with it, the shutter/mirror (don't forget, the majority of the sound you're hearing is the MIRROR, not the shutter) sounded so weak...nothing comes close to the way a 1D sounds.

For silky smooth, satisfying sound (as opposed to the brutal jackhammering of the 1D)...the 10D was the best. That camera sounded amazing.
