Natural Looking HDR

Hi,

HDR can be easily divided into the two categories of arty looking photos and photos that look very natural. As I am seeing couple of threads floating around here I wanted to dedicate this one to all photos that have been composed and arranged to retain the natural look. I start off with some examples:

This one looks like an HDR - doesn't look natural to me.

The upper part of the picture is a blend of two of the five originals shots, the lower part – by the lake is tonemapped and treated with some Topaz-filters.

Nice idea. I much prefer the natural look, and attempt to do the same myself. Please keep image size to 1024 per forum rules though. I hate side scrolling.

No, - HDR is a category all of it's own. Most advocates go past this point into 'Tone Mapping',= and completely 'stuff up' their image.

To be nit-picky, most of the "HDR" we see in this forum (but thankfully, not this thread) is not HDR at all, and simply tone-mapping of single, LOW DR images. But that's another discussion.

Love the image above. Perhaps just the tiniest bit bright for my eyes...or perhaps it's my cheapy laptop that is not properly calibrated.

There's always an argument for overbaked HDR especially if you can make it look eerie like this.

Also, the title of this post "Natural Looking HDR" needs to be defined. HDR is a technique all it's own and has some usefulness if you don't want the old droll looking photos and want to spice them up a bit with just a few mouse clicks in an HDR program.

To me Natural HDR is any HDR. Just my $.02.

I like this thread as well. Here comes some more from my archive. This picture was taken from my hotel-room in Svolvær (North in Norway). It was 1:00 am and the midnight sun was just at the horizon.

I'm using a new program called Machinery HDR. The photo in my link above I added some fog by hand in Photoshop to add to the eeriness of the photo.
