Would you go by yourself?

If you were going to go to Yellowstone for a week, not hike any trails and mostly shoot from the road, would you take someone with You or go alone?

Take me! Seriously, depends who you are thinking about taking. When I was there (with my wife), I signed up with a photography tutorial tour of certain areas of the park.

Summer or Winter? I have done both.

I'd take another photographer. If you go with a non photographer to strictly shoot it sometimes is not as much fun.

I'd go alone. Nobody to slow you down and you will get a ton more accomplished. You will most likely come back with better photos too.

I agree with this! I'd like to go at my own pace.

Thanks for the replys.. I'm not planning on taking a tour, just driving to the different spots I went to last time.... some friends are worried about Me being alone in Yellowstone..

Just take common sense measures, especially if hiking out for extended periods of time. Sharing your travel plan with family will help in case you don't report it at various times. For extra safety, you can get one of those SPOT devices that also allow friends/family track your movements on Google Maps via GPS.

While generally recommended to have someone else with you, sometimes it's not feasible/practical/pos​sible. In that case, just plan for problems to play it safe. Don't forget to pack plenty of water, food and warm clothing, too!

Sam, I've done plenty of road trips by myself, I don't see it as you "need" another person with you. If you have someone who you'd enjoy spending a week in Yellowstone with and who would enjoy the trip, well, why not? But it would be more about mutually enjoying the experience -- otherwise hire a personal "assistant"!

If it were me, a gun would be among the things I packed.

I did a week in Joshua Tree last year alone. My wife was very understanding of my need to unwind and take photos. I contemplated having another photographer go with me, but in the end I liked the freedom to go where I wanted and take me time. The only time I missed having someone with me was the night shooting. The coyotes and things that go bump in the night (I'm talking to you Bigfoot) did make me a little jumpy.

I've done both. If you take someone, whoever you go with should have similar interests so that when you want to spend an hour getting just the right image, your companion won't get tired of waiting around for you. That can lead to a less than wonderful experience for both of you.

I don't think you have anything to worry about, ESPECIALLY if you are staying on the road. I haven't been to Yellowstone but I've been to many of the other big western parks (Rocky, Glacier, Arches, Canyonlands) and those places are pretty much crawling with people.

Having said that, I also think going to Yellowstone and never leaving the car/road would be a complete tragedy.

I'd take someone I can outrun.

THe only thing to keep in mind is that after about 10 PM there are zero rangers on the road. At least not that we ever saw.

I wouldn't worry about anyone alone unless I thought they were going camping, or would walk around off the road around geothermal features.

I didn't take a tour. There was an escorted group of Photographers, led by a Nikon pro for a two hour session. It was a fun side-thing to do while I was there.

Not to worry you too much, but when I was there, a photographer went missing. In the morning, the day after he went out, they found his car parked off the road. They walked into the woods a bit and found his tripod with camera mounted, pointing downwards. They said that he may have been trying to photograph a sleeping bear. He was found dead. I am trying to find an article about it.
