It's always nice to have company, but that company would have to have, at the very least, the patience of a saint. On a trip like that, I don't want to be rushed.

As for the comments about guns, I would take one. Sadly, these days, bears aren't the only things in the wilderness to be wary of. Remember the park ranger in Rainier? Jus' sayin'.

If you're able to pack a firearm (be sure to declare it with the airline), and don't need it, super. But if you do need it, and you don't have it, you're screwed...

If you are driving, the driving itself will be about a gazillion times (I just made that up, by the way) more dangerous in real terms than your stay in the park.

Actually, when I am driving in an area I see as a potential for shooting, the other drivers on the road are at their own risk - "move over baby here comes the crazy camera guy" hehehehe

just a few of my thoughts...

Just go. You're in more danger, hour for hour, driving on the highway to get to the park than you are from wildlife attacks, hypothermia, lightning strikes, alien abductions, food poisoning, mosquito-borne disease, and serial killers combined inside the park.

Any time you start thinking that you're a big shot, try giving commands to someone else's dog.
Direct and blunt C&C wanted, please.

I wouldn't go if I wasn't going to hike around.

I would, have been and will go again by myself. Likely in June this year. May or may not hike. There is so much to do from the 'road' (and I backpack a lot). That could still include a lot of walking around though.

Are you staying in the park? Much better if you can, or get up early to avoid the traffic if driving in from West Yellowstone.

Definitely don't want anyone 'slowing me down' - or more likely speeding me up and not wanting to wait around 3+ hours for a geyser to go off.

Get in with the geyser gazers if you want the lowdown on catching the geysers. You can spot them hanging around either something large that is about to erupt or a few at some place no-one else is and doesn't look like anything is going to happen ever.

The wildlife folks have their own group that I'm not so familiar with, but a lot of patience and hanging around some of the people with longer lenses can certainly pay off (find out if they are locals). They know were and when all the last sightings were.

You didn't say if you were more interested in the wildlife or geysers.

Sam...

Im not a girl...but nonetheless I do use common sense when on the road. I have a truck camper and go to YNP every summer for at least 3-4 weeks. My whole trip usually runs 3-4 months...all alone. I a m 46 and have done this for 7 yrs now every summer.

You will not have a problem being alone in Yellowstone. I see LOTS of single women there every summer...doing everything from riding around to solo backpacking thru the backcountry. I habve never felt unsafe in any of the parks. Outside of them...once or twice...ususally in cities/more urban areas (Walmart parking lots come to mind)...

But dont hestitate to get out and do it. Youll enjoy it.

Wildlife - best place is Lamar Valley on the NW entrance road. And I would suggest looking into a course by the Yellowstone Institute Association....they have KILLER classes/field seminars. And you would be with a group. They have photo cloasses as well as many other themes. I higgly recommend any of their classes.

Have fun.....im envuious....but I will be out there again this summer...if all goes well hopefully working in one of the campgrounds in Grand Teton.
