Complicated tutorial! Have you tried it? The included workfile.psd is essentially an empty workfile with the quadrants divided up. The first 7 steps of the tutorial could have easily been incorporated into that workfile.psd. Too bad the author chose not to do that (probably because the file would be huge). 5D III, 7D | 17-55 f/2.8 | 16-35 f/4 | 24-105 f/4 | 85 f/1.8 | 135 f/2 | 70-200 f/4 IS | 580EX II | YN-560 | Manfrotto 190XPROB+498RC2

Of coarse I have, but it's been more than a year since I messed around with this effect. The included workfile.psd is essentially an empty workfile with the quadrants divided up. The author was working on this with a "for print" work flow. You can just change the image size for a more reasonable "web" work flow if so desired. The first 7 steps of the tutorial could have easily been incorporated into that workfile.psd. Too bad the author chose not to do that (probably because the file would be huge). Agreed. I tried to do the first 10 steps but I know I did somthing wrong from the very beginning (probably step 1) because I'm not getting the same effect so far according to the pics in the tutorial. The main thing I found out is he is working in CMYK instead of sRGB which he clearly fails to mention from the get go. So I guess if you want to follow exactly along with his tutorial you should make sure your documents are in the CMYK color mode. FWIW though, I would say just go ahead and work in RGB and tweak the colors to where it looks right for you. You can also use this technique to make a "flaming" effect with the right color choices and flame pictures or brushes! The tutorial is a good template but creativity is the key! Once on Step 4, after I filled a blank new layer with color #336699 and then apply the Difference Clouds filter (step 3), it doesn't look the same as what is shown in the tutorial. Color is more brownish for me, and the screen shot is more blackish. Could be the color mode situation? The author fails to mention in step 2 to "merge down" the "crome" filter layer with the previous layer. The author also fails to mention in step 3 for the new layer, to fill it with 50% gray so the "difference clouds" filter will even work. Also, I don't think it's necessary to place the 2 guides on this layer because you can pretty much guess what a quarter of the image is for the selection on step 4. Step 6 is just adding a texture layer (I never downloaded the dots) so use whatever you think looks good for your composition. Or just skip it all together! And btw, how large of a radial blur are you supposed to create in Step 1? Also failed to mention by the author. >myGEAR<

Definitely lots of things an amateur could not have figured out just by reading the tutorial. I'll give it a go again this weekend. 5D III, 7D | 17-55 f/2.8 | 16-35 f/4 | 24-105 f/4 | 85 f/1.8 | 135 f/2 | 70-200 f/4 IS | 580EX II | YN-560 | Manfrotto 190XPROB+498RC2
