its not looking good at all.

worse thing is I have not caddies so I don't know if the drives went down or not too. Server full, no backups for 2 weeks, this could be a &%%$$"£ nightmare! not happy!

All components seem to be making the right noises, just nothing coming up on the screen, no beeps from the mobo, just a green light inside. weird.

So replacement, PC and the ballache of a reinstall. So whats new on the Quad Core CPU front and 8GB of RAM as the PSU and drives will be OK but no doubt RAM I have will be too old. Wouldn't mind just bought 4GB more. Typical!

Help!!!

My main PC started to smell like it was burning earlier. I noticed the fan blowing on the CPU heatsink had stopped working. PC won't boot now.....argh!! Fried CPU? Can you diagnose anything on the mobo just incase its something else before I have to fork out for a new computer, this is not ideal at all!!!

Just some random thoughts:-

I thought most modern BIOS would trigger an auto shutdown as the Processor went overheat.............so just maybe try blowing a hairdrier on cold ( ;) ) over the CPU heatsick as you try to boot it??? Though your report suggests it is more terminal :( NB You say you smelt burning so did you shut down it did it 'die'?

Does it even get to POST when you try to power it up?

Any sign of blown capacitors on the motherboard?

Have you pulled the HDDs and tried accessing them using an external case method? If they are affected then more likely a PSU issue has fried more than just the CPU?

Remote diagnosis is hard ;)

That was a great meal ~ you must have a good set of pans :p

I should have scrolled down as I typed my reply above before reading this ~ doh!!!

No video output, maybe the graphics card (onboard or card) was taken down as well??? Though not sure if with graphics errors in POST I think you should get the appropriate error code beep series whether AMI or Award BIOS ???

What is generating the green light and was it ever there before this problem...............I surmise it is a surface monuted LED but they are there for a reason to 'tell you' something. What motherboard is it ~ make & model???

New build wise I would trust the PSU because that just possibly could have the cause of the trouble ???

its a P5Q.

PSU fires up OK as the fans and mobo, ram, drives all seem to be OK and the fan on the gfx card is going round too.

Bet I'm buggered if I can find a new CPU to put onto this mobo, instead of replacing the whole lot, cheapest option would be best right at this moment in time

Found a Celeron one here http://www.overclockers.co.uk …pid=701&catid=6&subid=567 (external link) for <£40 maybe worth a punt but YMMV???

But if you are not getting any POST beeps that is kind of worrying :( Because I say I thought that no video output was noted by a specfic beep pattern?...............and what about the green light you mentioned???

Edit ~ incidently which variant of the P5Q is it??? Was going to dl the manual but as variants have sometimes even different core functionality I did not wish to dl the wrong one??? ;)

Edit part deux ~ have you replaced the CPU HS fan yet and indeed does that run i.e. has the Fan header on the motherboard failed???

Edit 3 ~ dl'ed the P5Q Pro manual and found this about the Green LED
Onboard LED
The motherboard comes with a standby power LED. The green LED lights up to indicate that the system is ON, in sleep mode, or in soft‑off mode. This is a reminder that you should shut down the system and unplug the power cable before removing or plugging in any motherboard component

Likewise this about the POST beeps

BIOS Beep
Description
One short beep ~ VGA detected; Quick boot set to disabled; No keyboard detected

One continuous beep followed by two short beeps then a pause (repeated) No memory detected

One continuous beep followed by three short beeps ~ No VGA detected

One continuous beep followed by four short beeps ~ Hardware component failure

Do you have a voltmeter to check all the voltages are present. I had the 5v line go on one of mine which caused a few issues. Failing that do you have a spare power supply knocking around you could try?
