I'm not going to get into the gear debate, but if after all is said and done, you're looking for a MkIII, check this out:

I ultimately chose the 1D III over the 5D II and 7D. I like the way it handles, ISO 800 is pretty negligible difference between the 5D II and 1D III, though the 5D II IS cleaner...

ISO and MP aside, I feel the 1D III is the superior camera. After getting used to the speed, operation, all-button (none of that stupid mode dial BS) operation and everything, you won't want to use anything else. I'll probably never buy another camera that isn't a 1 series, or similar.

Also, it's true - most doofs won't know a gripped rebel from a 1D, nor will they care. They MIGHT notice a giant, white lens, but even then... people aren't that observant/smart.

I've looked at some samples, and even 6400 looks pretty usable. Do you find this to be the case? My T2i produces usable images at even 3200, sometimes 6400 is even okay if exposed well. I routinely use it at 1600 with absolutely no worries.

Could you let me know what you didn't like about it?

It's a 1.3 crop

Very bad exposure consistency, metering is a bit over the place

Although it is better at low ISO cleanliness in shadows, the 1D3 is worse at high ISO at the image level. 5D2 is also noisy but the file holds together better

Colours are a bit green/yellow

Only 10 megapixels

This is a problem why?

Not the two I own, maybe the problem isn't the camera?

Well I don't own a 5D2 or even a 5D1 to compare it to so I won't speak about something I don't know, but I do know that high ISO files out of the MkIII look damn good, even before any noise reduction processing. Maybe I'm just not as picky......

Colours are a bit green/yellow

Thats pretty vague. Sorry, but again I can't agree with that blanket statement without more information. I've found the MkIII to be very accurate in color rendition except in tungsten light, which seems to be the achilles heal of Canon WB in general. It's a pretty quick fix in post though.

Only 10 megapixels

Oh puhhleeeeze.........

I count on my 1D's metering much more than the 5D's - and AF point linked spot metering makes it brain-dead simple to always get a good exposure. The 1.3 crop only bugs me when i'm using my 20/35/50 - i'm "losing" bokeh" kinda, but even then, i'm also losing the edges of the frame where the lens doesn't perform as well.

I'm HAPPY with my 1D III files at ISO 1600, pleased at 3200 and "meh" at 6400. + 1 stop for the 5D II

my 1D III seems to render colors more nicely, to me, than my 5D II did - that was the first thing I noticed about it.

To the OP... unless you need the resolution or to go ultra-wide the 1D3 is the better camera.

smorter you must own a dud as i've never had any such problems with either of the 1D3's i've owned. AWB can be questionable but i think most Canons were prior to the 7D/1D4 where they improved the metering system... really only an issue if you shoot jpg.

Yeah maybe my 1D3 is a dud, it's been to Canon and they seem to think it's ok, but who knows.

I currently own the 4 cameras (1D3, 1D2N, 5D2 and 5D) mentioned as options in this thread - I'd rank them in the following order for event work:

5D2, 5D, 1D3, 1D2N

The 1D3 just lacks the spark that the 5 series has. Dunno - I just don't like it. I was looking through my portfolios and noticed that all my favourite pics were taken with the 5D/5D2, except for sports ones which were the 1D3

I can use my T2i and Siggy 10-20 for my UWA. I think going super wide is a little overrated anyway... my 28mm 1.8 would translate to almost exactly 35mm FOV on 1.3 which would be perrrrfect

I know what you mean, and I've always wanted a 5Dii. However, after seeing countless side by side samples comparing T2i/60D/7D to 5Dii... I don't know if I can justify the purchase on IQ reasons. At least the 1Diii would give me the benefits that come with a pro body. Weather sealing, AF... the list goes on.
