If you need to have the latest and greatest just get a film camera. Those have reached the end of the line. Perfect cure for Gear Acquisition Syndrome.

Perfect. Wait for a 5D5. Cameras are tools; buy them when you need them. I really doubt any new feature (like video or improved AF or bigger buttons) would make me go out and get one. Maybe bigger, wider spaced, more populated picture elements so I can make even bigger prints.

How can anyone who wants "latest and greatest" even mention a 7D? Thats like the seeking "greatest" Rebel, which is not a Rebel at all.

Instead, I'd go straight for a 40D, for around $400. That gets you a camera that is fast, has good autofocus, has very good image quality, and is very solidly built. It's by far the most bang for the buck you're going to find.

Then use the remaining money to buy some good lenses.

The 40D will serve you very well while you build your photography skills. By the time you've outgrown its (quite considerable) capabilities, you'll be in a much better position to decide where you want to go from there, and thus what equipment to buy next.

Ah... but KC, then he'll have to deal with all of the people complaining about how he's using such wonderful glass on such a terrible camera. Pfeh, he'll even have to hear that with a 7D, though usually most who do so will make "exceptions" in their broad sweeping statements about crop sensors being unworthy of L glass when it comes to the 7D...

OP - don't worry about that part - point out that you're planning to upgrade to full frame one day and then you are also excluded from the general criticism. ;)

KC makes an excellent point. You also don't have to worry about depreciation as much if you get a 40D - it will resell for just about what you pay for it, maybe a little less, because it's bought based on what it does, not how new it is.

I like to push buttons on thingies that take pictures. Sometimes I like to push other buttons, too.

Normally I'd agree, but somehow, people seem to regard the 40D as one of the best crop cameras ever. Some even appear to believe it to be superior to the 7D...

Regardless, I had to  at this.

Even better, at the point of upgrade, it can become an excellent second camera.

... Especially people with real world experience using the camera's now. But take what you read, for a grain of salt. Some info you read on the net, is not credible. ...

Not meaning to take what you wrote out of context, but really, some of the info on the net is not credible ? ? ? Who would have thought that...

OP, here's my two cents. Make a timeline for when you want to pickup your new camera. Save the required amount. Go out and get what you can afford and what gets you most of what you want.. Even if they announced the 5DIII or the 7D II- chances are it'll be a while till you can actually get one in your hands.. In the meantime, you can learn DSLR's in general, and your new camera. You know, you can wait endlessly for "new" products to show up, yet alone be announced. Or you can use what is available right now. It's your choice, but I'd take what is available now rather than wait for something that basically does not yet exist, 'cept in prototypes. Upgrade later when you have a reason- unless you have a lot of cash to blow. After you purchase, don't look for the new models and at prices either.. Ignore them for a year or so...

Sometimes a pice of new kit helps to keep the interest fresh and, let's face it, unless you're jetting off to new parts of the world every week, you simply have to find new things where you are, or new ways to photograph the old things. A 5D3 or 7D2 will probably not give you improvements proportionate to the price, but if it gets you out there looking at things differently and you have the money, my vote is to go for it and give the rest us the benefit of your experiences.
