How do you tell a portrait subject to "suck it in"?

Sometimes when I'm shooting portraits girls need to suck in their stomachs, not that they're fat, but it's unflattering. Instead of trying to find another angle, what's the best way to just tell them to "suck it in"?

I just ask them to either stand or sit up straight, shoulders back, make sure you keep good posture. Works almost every time :)

I would tell the photographer to learn how to pose a subject as not to accentuate their stomach. There are plenty of poses to make a subject look thinner. Start there first.

I generally use the same exact blurb every time before I start shooting. It goes something like this.
"I'm sure you've heard that the camera adds 10 pounds? Well, that's not exactly accurate, but it can if you're not really careful with your posture. I try to keep a good eye on it but try to keep your back straight in case I forget."

Ask them if there are any problem areas, that they're self conscious about, that they don't like photographed at certain positions. Throw out a few examples that previous models have said in the past, one of them being the belly.

Was that your approach for the "guy" in your avatar? ;)

If you see how women go in shopping at the mall, it gives you an idea of their absolute LACK of sensitivity to jelly rolls overflowing the clothing at different places and hurting their appearance to others. Same comment for guys, too. So why is it an issue in a photograph, when they walk around all day looking the same way?!

Add a "Photoshop the Fatty" fee to your invoices. Explain the invoice before doing the shoot. You won't have to tell them to suck it in.

Ah...because we're expected to make people look good regardless of what they really look like......
