Former point and shooter here (Sony DSC-HX5). I got the itch to get better quality photos of my family and convinced the wife how important it was to capture these moments as best we could. The decision was made to go DSLR, but holy cow, there are so many to choose from. I was pretty overwhelmed and intimidated. Enter Google and this forum.
After a lot of reading we decided on a Canon T2i as my first DSLR with the 18-55 IS and 55-250 IS II kit lenses. WOW, totally eye-opening coming from a point and shoot. After alot of reading, comparing EXIF data from people here who know what they are doing, and taking about 4k photos of my own to learn what all the settings do and how they are interrelated I feel that I have attained the level of NOOB Photographer! /fistpump
For me, taking pictures and taking lots of them was the best way for me to learn both how the camera handled light as well as what I actually needed from a camera as opposed to what I thought I needed before I ever used a DSLR. I've since sold the T2i and bought a 60D, for me I wanted a faster burst rate, better focusing and the flip out screen for ground level perspective shots. It also didn't hurt that the 60D fit my XL sized hands a lot better! I'm really happy with the 60D (with it had micro adjust however, hoping its possible that Magic Lantern can add this!) and moved my attention to my lenses...
I'm generally a buy once, cry once type of guy and once I know what my needs are I normally buy the best quality I can get so I never (or not for a really long time) need to replace something once I've bought it. I rented the 24-70 2.8L and I liked it, but perhaps the one I rented needed a little adjustment because the focus seemed to be off ever so slightly. Then when you hear these rumors about a new version of the 24-70 I figured I'd wait on that focal range and take care of a different range and bought the 70-200 2.8L IS II, and it gave me my second WOW moment in photography. I bought a nifty-fifty and really loved the flexibility the 1.8 gave me but I need something for wide indoor shots and I'm leaning towards the Tokina 11-16 2.8 (I'm hooked on constant aperture lenses now) but have been having moments where I think about the Canon 10-22 but worry about the f4.0-5.6 forcing me into the unknown of using a flash!
Anyway, the search continues for something on the wide side (any suggestions?) and until then I just find ways of getting the shot with my 70-200! Thanks for all the informative posts and thanks for reading my rambling story!
Now to learn more about Lightroom, calibrate my monitor...and the list goes on! Oh here are a couple shots of some of the girls in my life.
