Former point and shooter here (Sony DSC-HX5). I got the itch to get better quality photos of my family and convinced the wife how important it was to capture these moments as best we could. The decision was made to go DSLR, but holy cow, there are so many to choose from. I was pretty overwhelmed and intimidated. Enter Google and this forum.

After a lot of reading we decided on a Canon T2i as my first DSLR with the 18-55 IS and 55-250 IS II kit lenses. WOW, totally eye-opening coming from a point and shoot. After alot of reading, comparing EXIF data from people here who know what they are doing, and taking about 4k photos of my own to learn what all the settings do and how they are interrelated I feel that I have attained the level of NOOB Photographer! /fistpump

For me, taking pictures and taking lots of them was the best way for me to learn both how the camera handled light as well as what I actually needed from a camera as opposed to what I thought I needed before I ever used a DSLR. I've since sold the T2i and bought a 60D, for me I wanted a faster burst rate, better focusing and the flip out screen for ground level perspective shots. It also didn't hurt that the 60D fit my XL sized hands a lot better! I'm really happy with the 60D (with it had micro adjust however, hoping its possible that Magic Lantern can add this!) and moved my attention to my lenses...

I'm generally a buy once, cry once type of guy and once I know what my needs are I normally buy the best quality I can get so I never (or not for a really long time) need to replace something once I've bought it. I rented the 24-70 2.8L and I liked it, but perhaps the one I rented needed a little adjustment because the focus seemed to be off ever so slightly. Then when you hear these rumors about a new version of the 24-70 I figured I'd wait on that focal range and take care of a different range and bought the 70-200 2.8L IS II, and it gave me my second WOW moment in photography. I bought a nifty-fifty and really loved the flexibility the 1.8 gave me but I need something for wide indoor shots and I'm leaning towards the Tokina 11-16 2.8 (I'm hooked on constant aperture lenses now) but have been having moments where I think about the Canon 10-22 but worry about the f4.0-5.6 forcing me into the unknown of using a flash!

Anyway, the search continues for something on the wide side (any suggestions?) and until then I just find ways of getting the shot with my 70-200! Thanks for all the informative posts and thanks for reading my rambling story!

Now to learn more about Lightroom, calibrate my monitor...and the list goes on! Oh here are a couple shots of some of the girls in my life.

IMO, You are going from one extreme (50mm prime on crop body) to another one - UWA lens for family pictures.
Get 17-55 2.8 IS, good for indoors, the only 2.8 lens in this range with IS and it will be adequate by IQ to your 70-200.

Nice shots! Really like the 2nd one. You got one of the best lenses Canon makes, the 17-55 should work for what you describe.

Agreed, the 17-55 f/2.8 is an awesome lens and will compliment your 70-200 perfectly.

Just a correction to the above: the Canon 10-22 is a f3.5-4.5 aperture - not as slow as you had posted. It also isn't a big deal because when you are using a wide angle lens you don't need the fast shutter speed which you need for longer focal length lenses. With good technique 1/10 sec hand held is quite doable.

I also go with the above recommendations for the EF-S 17-55 f2.8 IS. Great lens.

If you want wide indoor shots, get a 17-50(55). I would look at the canon 17-55 or the sigma 17-50 OS. 17 should be plenty wide for inside. Heck, you could get the both the sigma 17-50 and 10-20 for a bit more than the canon alone.

T3i, Sigma 10-20, Sigma 30 1.4, 18-55 kit, 55-250, YN-565, a few books, some software, and a desire to get good.....

hensgonwild, you're right. Thats what I was thinking when I rented that 24-70 2.8L and when I heard that there might be a MKII of that lens coming soon I decided to delay buying in that range until it comes out and just use my feet to recompose if I'm able to find a UWA lens.

The Warlock, YES I read that as well, and this was after fondling a 11-16 at the local shop.

KF095, My thinking with getting a UWA is I would like to get some wide angle portrait shots on my upcoming trip to Yosemite and I think I would like how that combo would work. I'm considering picking up an inexpensive lens in the 17-50 range (Maybe a Tamron non-VC?) to hold me over until the 24-70 2.8L MKII is released. If I get a 10-22 (Thanks for the correction Preeb!) instead of the 11-16 that should work and my focal ranges will be covered (10-22, 24-70, 70-200).

Ideally the UWA I get will work well for indoors as well as outdoors, thats why I was looking at the Tokina 11-16 but the flare issue on those concerned me since I will be travelling with kids who don't like to wait for the correct light conditions for me to get the shot so I have to have technology help me get away with some less than ideal conditions.

The 17-55 2.8 is an interesting lens and I have to say its probably PERFECT for what I need right now, but I can definately see myself picking up a 5DMkii or iii in the next 6 months and would hate to tie up that much cash in a lens only one of my cameras could use. Are you able to use the 17-55 on a 5D?

Thanks for all the feedback and advice, I really appreciate it!

The 17-55 won't work on a full frame, but it has good resale value so you could use it until you do decide to go FF, then sell it and count the difference as cheap rent.

Yup, the 17-55mm 2.8 IS Canon is a very good lens for a crop

So, 17-55 is no good because it is EF-S, but 10-22 for the same cost is good and it is ... EF-S only lens...
You would have to hold almost indefenetally for 24-70 MKII as well.
