Been out in fantastic cold weather and after having taken 50-60 shots I realize my vertical releasebutton do not release the shutter when pressed all the way down. It does focus when pressed half way tough.
Have the latest firmware update (1.1.0) and tried to reset all camera settings, but that didn't help.
It has been a very cold day (-25C) but this is a camera that should handle that. The horisontal releasebutton works well, and the pics are good. I get no indication that anything is malfunctioning. Anyone with a clue somewhere?

Update: Called Canon Service representative and he wasn't sure I was inside recommended temperaturebracket, but should check and agreed that -25C isn't all that unusual in this part of the world so the camera ought to work. Well well, things happen, think I visit the nearest service center in person to discuss things.
Camera is less than two years, I wonder how often people service their camera? Is it per case or does it happen regurlarly and if so, by what intervals? This of course depends on usage, I am no professional, but do take 4-5000 pics/year. Furthermore, what kind of service do you ask for? Is there something standardized to go for? What is i.e a "full service"?
By the way, temperature dropped even further today to a -34C, camera working with the above menntioned limitations.:)

Have you tried flicking the vertical grip lockout switch to ensure its "on" properly ?
(that's the twist switch at the top of the grip when held vertically, in a similar position the the battery release, but at the other end of the grip)
Every time I have had a vertical shutter button problem its been because of that switch (normally has been bumped to "off")

I think it got frosty; at those temperatures, doesn't skin freeze in <30 seconds?

A 1D4 has a built-in grip!

To the OP, all I can suggest is that you remove the battery and maybe the date/time battery, try turning the On/Off switch on and off with the battery(s) out, try flicking the vertical On/Off switch, just to see if there was a glitch in the system, but still be ready to bring it in...sorry. These devices can malfunction and not much can be done to avoid it. You can buy a nice new expensive car, and you know that at some point after the warranty expires you'll have to get something fixed:)!

I know that all to well, love the camera so much that I can't get upset about it.. Called Canon tough just to get the procedures right and they were friendly enough. So this will be fixed to my satisfaction.:D Thanks for the hints, got to try them asap! Thanks!!!!

Have tested the hints - no change. All buttons on vertical grip works, but the shutterrelease will not fire when pushed way down, it does lock focus tough when pushed half way. This is a small job I hope for the guys at Canons servicecenter as soon as I get close to one.
Todays assignment is to document silkweaving in an orthodox monestary. They make their own textiles for services and so on. Very happy they asked me, because the best pictures are those that tell a story. Guess they are preparing my visit as I sit here writing, I am waiting for the "ready" phonecall.
I have learned a few things from this assignment: 1) Be generous with spreading your knowled)ge of photography. If people feel you want to show off their best, they open up. 2) Try to accomodate two camerahouses while travelling, you never knows what is going to happen!

P.S It keeps getting even colder

He said the same thing you did, try turning the vertical switch on/off? ;)

Echo does have a 1D4 btw (and a 1D3 and a 1D2n, etc). :)

Interesting new twist: Got an email from Canon Servicecenter in Oslo with technical specs from the manual stating the camera is guranteed to operate in the range 0-45C with less than 80% humidity. My response (as yesterday) was that in Scandinavia wintertemps dip below 0C all the time during winter, can/should they market the camera in Scandinavia at all? The rep. agreed it was just a way to avoid legal responsibility, also the shop where I bought it said the same. But he mentioned that they had prepared some cameras for artic conditions through some measures he could specify in detail to avoid problems.
My decision: Have it fixed and prepared for artic temperatures, but take the case to the consumer authorities, because it is provocative.

Ah, yeah, I went back and re-read his post and now it's all clear:)!

My suggestion, though, was to take the batteries out first, then flick both the ON/OFF switches on then off -- I had heard that this is a way of "hard resetting" the camera without leaving it to sit for an hour or two.

It's worth a shot, it seems many mysteries are solved by doing some sort of hard reset.

Yeah, since cameras are electronic and computer devices, you never know until you try!

Thought the problem had to do with snowdrift in the beginning, but it might also be that I did hanot wrap the camera in a plastic bag when coming inside for half an hour as recommended in the instruction manual. A self closing plastic bag is a must next winter.

EDIT: Free calibration is dependent on you finding all your lens-receipts. I am travelling and could not produce more than one of them, the rest I had to pay for since I had allready handed them in. Good thing to have them all micro adjusted, but the morale is always keep a copy (scanned ) of all your lens receipts with you.
