best walk around

Can you more experenced people recomend the best walkaround lens for my 600d. Would like it to go down to f2.8 as a lot of my pics will be low light live music band pictures. Also like taking boats and coastal shots.Thanx in advance.

I don't think my experience compares to many who live here on POTN, but I do have an opinion on a great walk around range for your 600d.

Three really good walk around lenses for the 600d are...
#1. Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS
#2. Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 OS
#3. Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 non VC

They all have a good zoom range in line to what framing you will need for the 600d. It's wide enough for landscapes, but yet zoom-y enough for those portraits....

having f2.8 is nice but it depends on the light as some prefer f1.4 and f1.8 for shooting night time band pics, all the 2.8 zooms are good, Tamron 17-50 2.8, Sigma 17-50 2.8 and Canon 17-55 2.8 are good choices

I'm biased as I have had the Canon 17-55 f2.8 IS USM lens as my walk about for just over a year. It's a really impressive lens and one that I will miss as part of my upgrade to full frame.

I can't comment on the others as I haven't tried them

The 17-55 was my first lens purchase for my 50D, and for that purpose, it gets the job done admirably.

I have the Tamron 17-50 VC, always been happy with it.

I had the Tamron 17-50mm non-VC, and felt the AF speed was too slow compared to a Canon USM or Sigma HSM lens. When the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 OS HSM came out, I sold the Tamron to get the Sigma. I'm very please with it. The Canon 17-55mm might be slightly better, but for me it wasn't several hundred dollars better.

Depends on what you need. If you want a quiet, quick focusing, nice lens and don't have a tight budget, the Canon 17-55mm is a nice choice. If you're on a budget, but are willing to spend a bit, the Sigma 17-50mm is nice, there is a new model that came out, make sure to get that. Sounds like the one tempest listed above (OS HSM) is the new one. If you're on a tight budget, and don't mind loud AF, then get the Tamron 17-50mm NON VC.

I didn't care about loud focus, and know how an insane amount of people love how sharp the 17-50mm is, so I went with that. I found one local that was practically new for a steal, produces great images. I can't justify spending $1000+ for quieter focus, a bit better build quality, and around same IQ.

BTW, the Canon is huge, it's like 3 times as big as the Tamron Non-VC.

i always thought the tamron would be an excellent match on a rebel body for lightweight walkaround kit.

if you don't wanna break the bank, I suggest the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 non VC. It is a very good lens for the money. I am more than happy with it before I got my 24-70mm f/2.8 L.

It is. My friend showed me his 17-55mm on a 60D, and even though 60D is bigger than a Rebel series, it was still a HUGE lens. The 17-50mm on my T2i fits perfectly. Hell, my Sigma 30mm is wider and feels like it weighs more even though it's .75-1" shorter.

I really suggest 17-50mm, it's a great lens for the price. After you get it OP, you can always sell it for close to what you paid and upgrade if it doesn't suit your needs. But I think jumping into a $1000+ lens when there are great options for much, much cheaper, isn't a very smart thing to do. Just my 2 cents.

The Tamron 17-50 non-VC is awesome. Was my main lens for my 40D for ages and it gave me some great sharp pictures. I never missed the Image Stabilisation of the more expensive lenses. I've now sold my 40D but have my Tamron for sale. PM me if you're interested.
