My biggest blunder so far with my 5D:

Somehow, an oily deposit of some kind got spilled onto my eye cup and wasn't thoroughly cleaned off and I didn't know about it. It was probably at my daughters wedding, I was letting anyone that wanted to borrow it use it and frankly, I got some of the best shots of the night that way.

Anyway, the oily mess was wiped off of the external surfaces but left underneath it long enough to work it's way into the case and eventually into the LCD. Not just inside the cover, but inside the actual LCD screen itself. It works, but the screen is unevenly lit from top to bottom and it has a pattern that looks almost like a water deposit across the whole screen that stays constant from image to image, on the menu screens and even when I zoom in. I am 100% sure it is not a sensor or lens problem.

Today I pulled it all down and had the actual LCD unit loose from the camera in my hand. I cleaned it carefully and made sure the contacts on it's wiring plug in were all clean and oil free, but I Knew I wasn't doing much because I couldn't get inside the actual unit without some bending of tabs and prying apart and then some scrubbing on the actual light emitters (that didn't seem like a high probability of success operation, but I might try it anyway when I have a new one to replace it and nothing to lose).

Anyway, I put it all back together and everything is same-same. Now that I know there isn't any more oil in there, I feal better about it and it is useable as is. I generally just use the LCD for the histogram and to check the available memory anyway, culling if I am running out of space and I know some shots are trash, not much more.

My question- Does anyone have a source for genuine replacement parts? I will be calling around looking tomorrow, but the experience available on this forum would be a great help in steering me to a trusted source if there is one- Anyone?

not sure they'll have what you're after,

see: http://stores.ebay.com/Pro-Photo-Camera-Shop (external link)

or: http://www.uscamera.com/ (external link)

part number for the LCD itself is CH9-1090-000 000 (LCD ASS'Y, TFT)

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

Thanks for your time. I am just getting started on my search and you have done it for me. Now I have to ask myself- would I want a 30D with an oily but useable LCD as a backup?

The bottom line on this for anyone searching out this thread or info on the LCD:

As of 1 2012, the CH9-1090-000 has been superceded by the new part number CH9-1110-000 that fits the 5D, the 30D and the 1D.

the places I talked to that had a part ready to ship wanted more than the 118 I paid, including shipping, directly from canon parts USA, 1-732-521-7230. Sometimes you have to go straight to the source.

there is a parts breakdown for the 5D available at:

http://www.scribd.com/doc/60807125/Canon-Eos5d (external link)

If anyone wants to try this I would be glad to share my experience with them just PM me

Hilarious John... I was going to post their site. Their "store" is 4-5 cramped rooms in an industrial complex with more little boxes and envelopes than I could ever imagine (And I work for an inventory company!) They've had or ordered everything I've ever needed and at reasonable prices!
