Hello everyone,

I was on holidays in Quebec and had a 16GB CF card in my 5D Mark II, there were old pictures on there from another event, then some new ones that we were taking. So we took a few in a restaurant, looked at them and then put the camera away. Went shooting again then my wife went to review the pictures from the restaurant and they were gone, all the ones from a previous event were still there and ones we took after the restaurant were there. Then we kept on shooting prob 4GB worth, when i got home none from the whole trip showed up on the card. I am not in panic mode I just want to know what to do. I have never had to deal with this and I want to do it right.

Please help!

The files called .TIF were probably the .CR2 files; try changing the extension and seeing if DPP can handle them.

Looked at the suggestions here?

Like Jon said, the TIF files are probably your CR2s. I've experienced it before, where the RAW files were recovered, but renamed as TIF, for whatever reason.

If that's not the case, and you want to try other software, I recommend Pandora Recovery. It's the best one I've tried so far. I think you can find it on download.com.

This was my reason for replacing the transcend card for a sandisk card. I also was loosing pictures on the transcend card. Sandisk until now no problems.

I was able to import those pictures into Lightroom as a tiff and they worked just like a normal raw file so that was nice!

This card is less than a year old, I am going to contact Transcend but if i format the card should i bother using it any more or just consider it a dud? It has warranty so i suppose they should replace it.

Well, any brand can fail, the odds are higher with Trancscend than with Sandisk, so keep that in mind trying to save a couple of bucks when buying a card for your camera.

That is a pretty bold statement. Especially considering that there was a bad batch of your beloved Sandisk cards that came from well known stores like B&H and Adorama (happened late last year).

Thinking that something electronic will not ever fail because you bought Brand X is not wise. Everything will eventually fail, somethings will take longer than others though. It is what the company will do about the failure that will separate Sandisk, Transcend, Lexar, et al from the no name brands. I do not have any facts, but I do think that Transcend will replace this card if presented to them, as they have a lifetime warranty. I have never had to use their warranty service, so that remains to be seen.

I have used Transcend extensively (10 cards and counting), and have had nothing but great luck with them. They seem to be the best bang for the buck. I have also used Sandisk with the same results, but my pockets were a little lighter.

Just my two cents.

can you tell us what program you used? there's a number of others you can try (assuming you haven't overwritten the card again) I've used PCinspector successfully on a number of occasions to recover raw files.

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:
