Guys I know this has been asked before. I am about to pull the trigger on a 17-55 but second guessing the decision. price mainly, I love having "L" glass but the price on the other lens is hard to resist along with a newer OS system,

now that it has been out for quite a while, is it a better buy at this point in time? I'm kind of afraid to move away from "L" and having a bad experience.

You know that the 17-55 isn't an L, right?

Here's my take on these 2 lenses.

Happy shooting.

ups, you are right sorry, I have L on my mind for some reason, you know what I mean, that lottery you have to plan when moving away from canon into 3rd party, thanks lightrules. :) I guess there's a new sheriff in town when it comes to standard zooms 17-50 OS it is

For your peace of mind, I've tried 6 different sigma lenses and none had any issues at all on my 450D.

It does depend on who you ask, to be fair. I honestly don't know how one would have more experience with these two particular lenses than me (owned/used over 30 copies of the Canon; at least 4 copies of the Sigma), but I am only one opinion at day's end.

If you poll this, I am sure the Canon would smother every competitor as it's Canon's flagship APS-C standard zoom and most people just get Canon and don't think twice about 3rd party. But having used them all, I just like the Sigma better for build, optical, and warranty reasons.

I'm sure you'll be very happy with it. It focus great in low light for me and images are relatively sharp wide open - better than my Sigma 30mm. Now where is that Sigma 50-150 OS?

I am leaning the Sigma way here because I have had a good experience with my 30/1.4. Now if I could just get the insurance company to pay up on the house claim so I could spend money on the lens instead of my contractors, but that is a whole other story.

I would have never done this before but I am really thinking of going full sigma from 17-50 OS and pair it with the 70-200 OS primes are another story but zooms I think on one of my cameras will have full sigma glass.

I really am thinking of getting that sigma 70-200 OS instead of the 70-200 IS MKI (MKII is too much money at the moment)

what do you guys think? do you think all sigma OS glass is crazy? or am I taking too big of a risk? I really love the images I am seeing from those two lenses, 17-50 OS already on its way, still thinking about the 70-200

Its around 2k in glass for one of my cameras with no canon name brand on any of them

The 17-55mm isnt an L lens, but it HAS L glass
I'd rather go with the 17-55mm anyways because of its usefulness

well I got the 17-50 OS, now i'm debating if I should complete the kit for one of my cameras with the 70-200 OS instead of the 70-200 2.8 IS MKI that I originally wanted to get

Well I did it. I got the wide angle....great. Then I got the 17-50, and that lens got me in the camp. I then got a 100-300 f4 that was discontinued at a killer price for such a telephoto and that lens is also great. I would without hesitation get a 50-150 to round out the group and call have all sigma lenses....except my m42 mount primes, which are awesome. I am selling my canon 50 and 55-250.

This forum makes "the sigma lottery" to be the boogiman and quite frankly despite being 3/3 on sigmas, if I had to return a bad one, that hassle is worth the price difference because the quality differences in good sigma glass and canon glass is extreme diminishing returns on investment.

Everything is relative.
Gear: 6D, Unholy Trinity:twisted: (24Lii, sigma 50A, 135L), and for the other ends of the spectrum, sigmaEX 14mm2.8 and sigmaEX 100-300F4.

Do it. All around better performer than Canon's MkI with a newer stablization system at the same price. It's slightly inferior to the MkII, but is also ~$700 cheaper.
