Hello photo enthusiast,

New guy here (my brief intro) https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1143258

2 weeks ago my wife got me a wonderful bday gift - 24-70L. Outside my kit lens (28-135) this is my first lens. Other than attaching it to my 50d and going on a photo walk what else should I do?

I read/heard about:

-lens calibrating - is this necessary? If so how do I go about doing it?
-tips and tricks to determine if there are any flaws - what are they?
-warranty card - do you fill it out? reason I ask is because I notice used lens for sale with warranty card

Other than the mentioned is there anything else that I should keep me mind for future lenses?

Thank you for all your input :)

Checklist:

Have working camera? If yes go out and shoot.

Have new toy: if yes go and use it.

Have working camera AND new toy...... This isn't a lesson in first order logic here.

Welcome to the forum! :D

Well, don't look for problems if you don't experience any problem. Those are supposed to be some nice tools for you to capture whatever you like and unleash your creativity. So, go out and start doing that, instead of playing with test chart and wasting the shutters. :)

You need to start the calibration process by taking it out and shooting 25 pictures at a time. Come back home and upload and check it out and calibrate. Go back out shoot another 25 and so forth until you have shot 500 pictures. Until then, it will not be calibrated :)

Aside from attaching it to my 50d and going on a photo walk, there really is nothing else for you to do.

NOW TAKE THAT LENS AND GO OUT AND SHOOT SOME PICTURES!

If you want to get a second lens, you better give the wife a big kiss first, then go out and shoot.

What a great gift. That's awesome, I just got mine today. Seriously, just use it. If there's a problem you will find out by using it. Do that first before going to the next step otherwise you'll just be a nerd. lol

Very difficult next lenses when you have not said what you want to shoot. But park that area and go out and fill a couple of 32GB cards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WOW amazing lens... day and night compared to my kit lens (28-135). The AF is quick and quiet. Wish I had more time today to shoot so I'm looking forward to tomorrow. I also enjoy the weight!
