y'all ready for this?

We're running Tough Mudder in NC on Saturday. My sister Sandy is going to wear a t-shirt that says, "I am a Hurricane." So yeah, we're ready. :p

Taking photos with a fancy camera does not make me a photographer.

Quiet...

So the studio is essentially empty. Very weird looking at it this way... We'll be completely moved in by next week.

Then just a couple of walls to knock down, a bit of paint and flooring and we'll be done. The common phrase seems to be... "Congratulations, now you're broke forever". :)

We bought in September of last year and we were at Home Depot every other weekend for the first 4 months or so...there is no end to projects you can find in a house.

Yeah, i can already see the projects going on...

Doesn't help that we also have the wedding going on. The only good thing is that we have about 3 months free of any major photography work to get the house in order before the season starts again... yay.

Good luck! We started off with one thing, that lead to a wall being taken out, then a fireplace out, which meant the gas pipe had to go, and the venting etc. Then the hardwood floor needed to be put in place of the space left behind etc.

Then we did the toilets, but then we saw the leaky taps (read faucets), so we replaced the washers/cartridges for now, but then we will end up replacing the system for something that isn't 14 years old now. All the appliances are 14 yrs old too, so we will need a new fridge/freezer, dishwasher, microwave, washer/dryer - right now they all work, so we aren't going in to replace them yet - so we are in the midst of conjuring up plans to redo the kitchen etc.

Yeah, it is constantly on going :D:D:D

there is a stat somewhere that a new home owner spends 80k at homedepot/lowes on "projects"
so add that figure to the bottom line of the house.

And the other thing with a house everything you need cost 1k.
dining room set 1k
new couch for living room 1k.
ect ect...

Wow, i could have written the same thing.... we have a wall in the living room that will be taken down asap. (I know all jobs are different, but what did they charge you to take a wall down?)

We have to fix the floor once the wall is out.

Then it's a barrage of things:

1. New kitchen appliances.
2. Small addition.
3. Take second wall out.
4. Redo bathrooms.

I'm trying to be excited about all of this... but i have to be honest - all i see is a money pit and a time eater. Shouldn't i be happy to be in my own house? I'm not feeling it yet... just not feeling it.

Funny, everything i've been quoted thus far has been 2k, 10k 25k. wtf.. i wish everything would be 1k, i can deal with lots of little 1k's no problem. It's the 10 and 25k's i'm scared of.

Get quite a few quotes.

We recently re-did our kitchen and needed a gas line moved (maybe 2 feet) and water moved (maybe 4 feet), as well as new venting. We got 4 quotes and they ranged from $1k to $4k for the same exact job.

we didn't feel it until the wall was out. They didn't charge much, I think it was $3k, to take out the wall, fireplace, gas piping, then put in a new lvl beam to make the house a but more structurally sound.

What we didn't do the 1st time, which we know now, is to take off the drywall yourself - we didn't because we had no time with alexander being so small. That will save a bit of time and money, then you can find out all the lovely surprises behind the walls - wiring, how ****ty it is all built etc. We were expecting a large beam behind the wall to go right through the room as a load bearing wall. Turned out the beam that existed didn't even go half way through the living room/dining room - and sat on a single 2x4 of wood. so we were not sure if it was a load bearing wall or not. Not taking chances, we put in a 7" LVL beam across the room, supported it, then it all came together. The contractor we used was an utter prick, and utterly unreliable of when he would come and only give 1 hr notice that he couldn't come etc. I wouldn't recommend him to fix up saddam hussain's old palace right now let alone sort out a single ****ing wall.

Again, sounds exactly like we need to do. I do however plan on taking out everything myself...

We also need to install a beam to compensate for the lost wall...

Man, contractors are so unreliable. Have you guys used Angieslist at all? They seem to have a rating system, not sure if it's rigged or not. But at least it's something?

Wall with fireplace:

Large beam between the rooms - is this supposed to be load bearing?

Smaller LVL beam installed, wall and struts out:

drywall installed and shoddy plasterwork installed:

To fix up their mess, we'll probably - when we have more time - take out a section of drywall with really bad plastering on it (why they caked it on we have no idea), go to home depot, buy 1 piece of drwyall for $9, install it ourselves and sort that wall out. Simple.
