Night Shots

Hi. I'm a relative newbie to digital photography. Did a lot with 35mm and 2 1/4 square in the past, so I'm pretty experienced, but digital is a new world.

I used a Canon D60 with an EFS 18-135mm IS lens and a tripod. I couldn't get a shot (of a campfire) at night without the built-in flash popping up and firing.

Now, admittedly, this camera's a LOT smarter than I am, but after reviewing the manual, and a few other books, I can't find an answer.

Any suggestions?

Switch to Av,Tv or M mode and the flash won't fire.

... unless you pop it up. So make sure the flash is down (not popped up).

^ What he said. "Green Box" mode should be the only one which will automatically pop the flash up and use it. I don't even think 'P' mode does it. Since you've got plenty of experience with film, using Av, Tv or Manual modes should be familiar territory for you and will eliminate the problem.
