Lee might be the place to look, that way you can jump right into GND's too. Yes lots of money, yes you might have to get on a waiting list... but in the end... it is where you will end up...

If you go with a filter holder kit, it will cost more but offers proper GND options, etc... However, thats not to discount screw in filters.

Filter holder kits - Cokin Z Pro and Lee

Screw ins: B+W and Heliopan

Those are my recommendations for brands. Now, how many stops, depends on you and your application.

I'd suggest the Lee system, you have more flexibility than with screw in filters - especially GNDs

Check out this thread

But I would suggest the lee foundation kit and pair of 2-3 stop soft and hard GNDs and a polarizer

Depends on budget I suppose. Lee are great if you have a large budget, Hitech are also good if on smaller budget. I have both and both are good.

If you are considering moving to FF Lee is your best option with wide lenses but not cheap and will take some time to get your set.

Lee/Singh Ray would be the targets for both solid and graduated NDs. Hitech is a reasonable, budget solution; however, many complain of color shifts imparted when stacking those. Lee is frequently on backorder, though, and may take a couple months to get.

For solid, screw-in style NDs (avoid the graduated versions of these) B+W, Heliopan, Hoya all make good stuff.

Singh Ray, Fader and a few others now (Hoya and Heliopan, I believe) make variable ND filters where you can dial in between 2 and 8 stops worth of light reduction, which can be nice. These are, also, not cheap.

If you want to go the circular route, B+W is where its at IMO.

I have the Lee foundation, polarizer, .6 soft GND and .9 hard GND. I think it's a great kit, too bad I don't use enough. Maybe a big stopper would complete the collection
