Hello!

I'm interested in trying out HSS when shooting outdoor portrait . I'd just use a simple setup with speedlite/s and shoot through white umbrellas for fill. What kind of triggering options are there, how is the ST-e2/yongnuo eqvivalent outdoors? What's the most reliable solution?

I mainly use a 5D and 85 1.8, 200 2.8 for outdoor portraits.

The best is currently the Phottix Odin, but it will only work with Canon and Nissin speed lights, not the Yongnuo's.
There is Pocket Wizards which are also reliable, but not as functional.
Both are great options if you want something reliable and well built.

Radio Poppers work well, but require a master flash or the ST-E2 on camera.

Then you get a range of a low quality products from China, some are ok, some not.
Ok for limited use if your on a budget.

Why not get a ND filter to get to sync speeds? That way you won't loose tons of power from HSS.

This along with the realization that you dont absolutely need to shoot wide open to make good images.

The "loads of power" is two stops.
Its likely stopping down or applying an ND filter will absorb that much light or more.
The key is getting the Speedlite close to the subject.

Thanks for the suggestions, I have to look more into the Odin alternative :)

Could be an option but I'm worried about camera shake using the 200mm for portraits. I don't want to darken the viewfinder too much either.

Point taken, but on some occasions I really wish I could shoot wide open and I want to keep the possibility of doing so if I want to.

So at F2.8 1/250th of a second and you're worried about camera shake? Do you have problems holding cameras or anything for a long time? This is an actual question because you could try using a monopod if you need the support.
