I posted my XTi on my local Craigslist yesterday, and received this email today:

Thanks for your response i live in San Diego right and i will be leaving for the united kingdom in the next 2 days for a rugby coaching course. I will like to buy this for my son schooling in abroad. i will pay you $350 for the item and i will be paying you $100 shipping through USPS Express mail International for the shipping to my son. i will pay you through my paypal account. Please get back to me with your paypal name and paypal email account so that i can make the payment asap. And also if you don't have an account yet you can kindly set up at www.paypal.com (external link) then you can get back to me with your paypal name and your account e mail address for the quick payment ..

Thanks

Two things worry me about this response,

1. He's offering $50 more than I had it listed for,
2. He lives on the other side of the country, how did he see my Georgia ad?

Let me know what you guys think.

Benjamin

No, its the most common scam reply out there. Are you serious, or is this supposed to be funny?

Okay, this is getting weird. I also posted my net book and received this seconds after posting on here about the camera. It is from a woman, and her email reads:

Alright, thanks for the reply. I hope the item is in good working condition? I would have loved to come and take a look at the item myself but my work wouldn't give me the chance. I will want you to send me some pictures of the item. As for the price of the item, i will offer you $450 plus the shipment fee to my son who is in TEXAS. So i will want you to get back to me with your PayPal email address or a PayPal money request or an invoice so that i can make the payments. Hope to read from you ASAP. :) Thanks...

Again, more money than I asked for ($100 more this time)
And also out of state.

Am I just being paranoid???

They can file a dispute after you send it. They could be using a hijacked paypal account. They could have some method of accessing one of your accounts. Check craigslists warnings. Only use craigslist for dealing locally.

Somehow, he knows my PayPal now. It isn't the same as the email I've been contacting him through. What should I do? I HATE scammers!!

What you should do is cease contact. You might contact paypal and put a freeze on your account. And deal only locally using craigslist in the future.

Seems that Craigslist is a scam haven lately. That and the perfect fence for stolen items. It's win win for the criminal element.

That's so unfortunate. Where else can I sell my stuff? I tried here with no takers, and Craigslist is now out. Any ideas?

Craigslist isnt out, dont be reactionary. Just dont be gullible either. List your gear on craigslist and be clear that you only do local deals. You can even ask for them to include some bit of knowledge only someone local to the area would know in the reply. But pay attention to the responses: dont reply to anyone who offers extra money; dont reply if they ask if the ITEM is still available (real people say do you still have the camera). Ask for a phone number after the initial contact, if its not somewhat local then move on.

Your advice seems very sound, I'll give Craigslist another chance.
