Is the 100mm macro any good for studio work, or should I just shell out an extra 100 for the 50mm? Opinions please and thank you. :)

Both would make nice studio lenses. I guess it would depend on how big your studio is.

The benefit with the macro is that you'll be able to get some nice creative closeups, maybe on an eyelash or something or for general macro usage.

The 100mm macro is a very sharp lens and 100mm is a nice portrait focal length on a full frame camera. It might be a bit long on your 60D unless you've got a lot of room to work with. The only issue is that the autofocus is a bit slow.

excuse me, shell out 100 MORE for the 50 1.8? I don't follow. Personally I'd go for the 100 macro, it's an essential studio lens, though quite long for model work in a smaller space.

depending on what 100mm macro the L $1060.00 or non L $580.00 i think she meens buy the 100 an extra 100 for the 50. i have owned the non-L liked it but for what i used it for the focus just wasnt fast enough on my 7d but did take nice pics. it also did suck in low lite i dont know if anyone else had that problem.

Yea I've never had that issue. AF was also quite fast on that lens

edit: extremely fast for a macro. Use the limiters and also don't expect too much because its focusing scale is way different than a standard lens. I still find it easily fast enough to use as a dual-purpose lens.

Hi Katie,
As a few have noted, your question is a bit back-to-front.
The EF50mm f/1.8 is cheaper than the EF100 f/2.8 macro. And a LOT cheaper than the EF100 f/2.8L macro.

And for "studio work", are you shooting people in a studio, or "things", such as brand watches in close-up? And how big is your studio? And if it's people, are you wanting to shoot headshots only, or full body, or individual pores?

We've got all the answers....but we need to know that you know the right questions.

Regards,
Simon

PS: Canon don't make an "EOS D60". It's called an EOS 60D.

100mm Macro all the way. Even in studio you can get great shoulder up portraits and for product the 100mm will be much better than the 50mm f/1.8

I wonder if she meant, spend an extra $100 and get the 50mm in addition to the 100mm macro.

I use both for portraits on a full frame camera. On a crop, the 50mm might be more useful indoors. For the extra $100, I would not hesitate to get the 50mm. It's really a great lens. The 100mm macro is mighty fine too.

I would. Mine fell apart from an 18 inch drop to the ground. AF gear got chipped and never worked again... after only 2 days of owning, TWO!! It was brand new.I gave it to a friend who only had the 18-55 kit lens as an MF 50mm f/1.8 and bought the f/1.4 USM version.

I think I've seen her post before, she's got a D60, the model before the 10D. :)
