Hey guys

Heres a pic taken at iso 6400 1/200th @ F4 RAW

Is the noise high? or is it about right for my camera?

I have applied NR with lightroom , both presets @ 25 (colour & luminosity)

thanks

Raw with LR NR

I expect 6400ISO RAW and no noise reduction is going to be quite noisy. This is normal.

A little hard to tell from that image, especially as it's resized, but I guess it looks pretty similar to mine. :)

This is with Lightroom NR of luminance 0, color 21 and detail 50.

I expect the 3rd picture looks different (slight color differences) than the RAW, other than NR, is because of picture styling.

Looks about right if you are just using canned NR sliders and actions. I won't dig up my 6400 and 12800 shots into this post, but you can see in my mini-reviews link in my signature. :)

Does anyone think the noise is objectionable? I'm deciding between the 7D and 5DMKii, and yes I realize that the 5D is supposed to be better....but I'm upgrading from a 30D where 3200 ISO is problematic. IMO the ones posted in this thread are perfectly acceptable.

OP, I'll say the pics look good to me but IMO this might not be the best test of the 7D high ISO capabilities. You had plenty of light and a static subject. This shot could have been taken at 1/50 ISO 1600 or even 1/25 ISO 800 depending on the lens used or how steady you are. I feel the 7D is pretty good with high ISO, but IMO it would have required a bit more work in darker conditions to get these results. Of course, I could be completely wrong, but that's been my experience so far.....

Again, please look at my 7D High ISO thread: https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1079217

Here is a partial crop (70%-ish) at 6400

Here is ISO 12800 in low, low light using some of the techniques described there.

Your results are the ultimate goal, I've been able to get close, but I think the channel based noise reduction has quite a bit to do with your success. I've been putting off investing in 3rd party NR software, but I'll probably go for it sooner than later.
