It's the Open mono Competition in a few days time at my camera club. My daughter, Ruby, is now a member of the club and is entering competitions. (She did very well in the January Competition, placing 8th out of 34 images!).

She decided to take the following shot. She set it up, she tried to take it, but since it was on the floor she couldn't see through her viewfinder. So I lent her my 40D and she used LiveView to do it. She then did the PP, recovered highlights in ACR, and used Silver EFEX Pro for the conversion. She sharpened it herself, too. So, it's all her own work.
She would like to know what you guys think of it...

I like the concept and the B&W but I don't care for how the egg in front is partly cast in shadow

Wow. How old is she? How did she do the lighting? (i.e. was it direct lighting from something, did she use off camera flash, etc.)

I don't think that the shadow in front is doing that much "wrong" - in fact... since it emerges from the shadow enough for you to see detail, it's great. :)

Thanks. She wanted a quite heavy "vignetting" to this...she was thinking quite spooky things when she did it, i think! Hence the shadowy nature of the picture...

Cheers

This was laid on the kitchen floor, with the light from the strip lights above. The shadows come from vignetting within the Silver EFEX plug in she used for the processing. And yes, I think the egg emerging from the shadows is what makes this picture...makes it a little "scary" really...which is what she intended. :)

Oh, and Ruby is 6.

Cheers

Definitely impressive for six! :D

I wasn't using a film SLR until I was in my early teens! I THINK, though, that my dad let me use his 220 Instamatic when I was six...

I upgraded my 400D to a 40D this last Christmas. Ruby had taken an interest early on and was using the wife's IXUS for a while. The 400D owed me nothing, really, so it seemed reasonable to give it to her. She has shown she can handle it, and look after it. and she learns quick, so when I explain stuff like ISO and aperture, she is beginning to get it. Likewise with certain functions in photoshop...she remembers procedures quite well.

long may it continue...I need a shooting partner when I retire! :)

It is a great thing to do with your daughter. My dad (had to, it was a Pentax K1000) taught me all about aperture, etc., too. My son's a lot older (13), but when I get a full-frame he's getting my T1i and its lens collection. :)

Excellent. Even if it doesn't become a career, it's a great hobby to have. :)
