While I was in Arches, I was shooting sunrise, had hiked several miles in the snow, to get a great spot under the arch. I'd been setup and was waiting for light.

Right as the best light fell, this jackass comes up the trail and sets up his tripod below the boulder I was standing on top of.

He sets up his gear and then proceeds to ask me about mine. He says" 5D, huh... nice." So, out of courtesy, I ask him, about his... he says "D3X". I say, ah.. nice back to him.

He then proceeds to go into a diatribe about how much better the Nikon is than my Canon. I tell him that I work mostly at night, so the sunrise thing is not my main cup o tea. Well, he goes on and on about how awesome his body is and that it just leaves mine in the dust when it comes to night shots.

I just smirked and said "Okay, whatever".

He continues on and on, and I finally tire of this and tell him: "Look I do a lot of night stuff and I do a lot of time-lapse - your Nikon may have better high ISO performance but for night stuff, I've never seen any difference AND for time-lapse your camera is complete junk". He disagreed, saying that it had built in time-lapse, etc.. in which I asked him, what is the intrasecond intervals that your body can shoot in bulb mode? He had no idea... so I informed him that all Nikon bodies are pretty much crippled when it comes to capturing less than 1 second bulb shots such as used in bulb ramping.

He got quite offended and asked if I had a website, how much stuff I sold, how big my penis was, yada yada yada.

The light was gone and I quickly got down and walked away. Such an *******.

In college a girl came up to me holding this camera, asking me 'where do you put the memory card?'

Also - OP totally stole my thread :p

That was the first SLR I shot with! I wish I would have gotten it when my dad died... I do have my P3, but it isn't the one my dad taught me with, you know? :(

Mine is kind of a recurring theme (even from other enthusiasts)...

Them: "Look, there is a neat little bird 500 feet away on top of that building...take a picture of it!"
Me: "I have a wide angle lens on my camera, it'll look tiny in the picture."
Them: "But I thought you have a zoom lens."
Me: "Yes, it zooms between ridiculously wide and wide."
Them: "I don't get it...but it's such a big lens!"
Me: *show them that I'm all zoomed in, take a picture, show them the result* ...of course 35mm max zoom on a FF means...the little birdie is 2 pixels tall.
Them: "Well..that's dumb. What's the point of a big lens if it can't zoom???"
Me: *walk away quietly*

I get the same discussion, but with the 100-400 mounted; and the bird 500 feet away is a Chickadee or some form of 'little brown bird'...

Well he did see me take a photo, look at the LCD screen, and I even showed him a few photos on the screen. And by old I meant in the 50s (sorry to all of the 50s people here lol)

HEY..I resemble that remark.

Maybe she reads too much Ken Rockwell...

Grrr....I absolutely hate ignorant comments like this! Have you read much of KR's stuff? He LOVES his Canon gear (especially his 5D) and compares a lot of Canon stuff favourably to comparable Nikon gear.

KR isn't nearly as ignorant as all the Canon fanbois/fangurls who hate on him.

Well it's funny. I tried my best to give her feedback and get her some interest into post processing and she just shoots it down. Calls it "lame". Granted that i'm only 22 and she's like 17 idk how that can be lame. She's limiting herself imo.

Even offered to buy her lightroom or photoshop or even some nikkor gear. But oh well. My 5DII photos suck compared to her standards.

Why do you even worry about it? It sounds like you're trying really hard to impress and educate her and she's just being your average teen (when I was in high school, we had the Chevy/Ford rivalry...most of those guys drive Toyotas now haha...)...sounds like you're taking it way too seriously ;)

In case you doubt me...for my most recent purchase (Canon 100 f2), KR's review was one of hundreds I read...here's his take on it. Note his comparisons to one of Nikon's best lenses in the range...

http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/lenses/100mm-f2.htm (external link)

EDIT:

And since the original comment was made about a comparison between a 5D2 and a D90, here's KR's take on the 5D2 (a camera he constantly praises, and uses extensively)...

http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/5d-mk-ii.htm (external link)

Not exactly a hater...(again, note his comparisons between the 5D2 and the Nikon cameras, where he gives the advantage to the Canon).

EDIT 2:

KR's review on the Canon 85 1.8

http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/lenses/85mm.htm (external link)

EDIT 3:

KR's review of the Canon 70-200 f4L IS

http://www.kenrockwell.com …lenses/70-200mm-f4-is.htm (external link)

70-200 2.8 IS II

http://www.kenrockwell.com …es/70-200mm-f28-is-ii.htm (external link)

Where you guys are getting the KR hate from is beyond me...

I don't "hate" on him, and I didn't suggest she read too much Ken Rockwell because he is pro Nikon. For a long time (and most links are still very visible on the internet) he insisted that there is no purpose in post-processing; that the designers of cameras know the best way to post process images and that the best possible images you can get from your camera are from shooting JPG only - that RAW serves no purpose. He has stepped back from that stance a bit, but still defends that position as "usually good for most photographers." Since this person was saying that post processing served no purpose, I suggested she might have read too much Ken Rockwell.
