Can we get back to the topic? There's actually an unwritten rule here, about not talking about KR.
It's like the first rule of Fight Club, actually.

+1 on that!

I do think the quote was taken out of context.

Yes, KR tends to exaggerate things quite often to entertain, draw more viewers, whatnot, but he speaks much more truth than most people in these internet forums.

He, time and again, emphasizes the importance of concentrating on creating good images -- as opposed to arguing 24/7 about why my 70-200mm isn't sharp enough, how much I lust over the newest body that just came out(95 percent of POTN).

Yes, lusting over shiny new gear is fun, but that is consumerism not photography. And KR seems to emphasize photography over all else. And for that alone, he speaks more sense than most people here (plus he is always an entertaining read, kind of like jeremy clarkson of photography).

Well put!!! I especially like your Clarkson analogy haha...Like I said, I've only ever read his reviews and nothing more...but a lot of his stuff that I know people would find offensive (perhaps it hits too close to home) makes sense...that's what I really like is that he kind of puts the brakes on "you have to buy the newest/shiniest" trend...

Wait...so after you say your piece on the topic, we have to stop discussing it? That seems a little uncool, doesn't it?

You made an off topic comment that is about as inflammatory on here as religion or politics (actually its about the same thing) and it was answered.

Now your comment has completely derailed this thread, and you're continuing to do so. Good job! ;-)a

Carry on then... Maybe we can get a mod to change the title to "why Ken Rockell rules or doesn't".

The email I just got from my boss suggesting I can shoot an entire volume of the Hodgeson manuscripts (external link) in a week. Guess I should get some sleep :(

Actually, if you look back, I didn't derail the thread, a previous poster commented on KR, and I simply replied...just like you did.

Do you really have nothing better to do than to police a thread on here? I didn't derail anything...someone brought up an issue and I responded...after that I returned to discussing the main topic of the thread. Everything was great until YOU also replied to the same issue and THEN decided to be a loser and **** that people are discussing the issue you were happy to talk about and then did an about-face for no reason other than what I'm suspecting are bipolar tendencies.

We should really change the title to "Talk about anything Todd wants to talk about as long as he feels like talking about it, but when he's done talking about it, the rest of you have to STFU or little Toddy will get his panties in a bunch."

I guess I would be the "derailer" - someone had said that someone told them that post processing was unnecessary, etc., and I suggested she read too much KR because he has a few posts against PP. That was taken as against him, and then it was all about him...

I really was just kind of commenting on the origin of her possible prejudice against PP and was kind of doing it in fun... apologies here, seriously! LOL

Don't slap my hands.... it might hurt. :-S

You don't have anything to apologize for (neither does anyone else, as far as I'm concerned)...I'm not sure why he got so worked up over it...threads go off-topic all the time, and his insistence that it gets back on topic (after it already did), derailed it more than it was derailed before.

But...everyone was having a mature and interesting discussion the returned to the topic at hand...I see no reason to cry about it...especially since he took an active part in the "derailment".

I think the most common question or comment I get is when people see me working: [Usually in a thick southern drawl accent] they'll often ask me why/how I am making pictures at night.?!?

I've also had a guy tell me as I was taking a shot "your flash didn't go off!" I didn't have the heart to tell him any different and just said "thanks!" LOL!!

Anyways, I've got a couple,

Was trying out my 135L at the dog park, A older guy walks over to me, we start chatting, he says he's been shooting motorsports for about 20 years and makes about NZ$5k a year selling images to magazines and such. He then told me, (pretty much word for word)

Buying a fast lens is a waste as you cant make it darker to increase your depth of field or to get motion blur

Also, when i shot a friends wedding, I asked a friend who has a photography business if i could borrow her 580EX. I asked If she could include the little plastic stand so i could put it on a tripod and use as a slave. Her response

It didnt come with one, plus you cant do that, its only an external. You know, to go on top of your camera.

And these people make money off photography!
