I second the heat issue. I had the same kind of thing happen to D-Link wireless router. It was overheating then cooling down. I had it in a tight spot and it wasn't getting the cooling it needed.

Another consideration, (although it sounds like your problem is happening far too regularly for this to be the problem BUT....) Microwaves and wireless phones will knock a wireless router off the air. I had a 2.4GHz phone and everytime my wife used it, I was knocked off the internet. Also for awhile my computer and all equipment was plugged into the same power circuit as my microwave. Again, when the microwave was used, I got knocked off the internet.

Just some food for thought...

^^ Agree. Extend the cable, try moving everything; modem, router.

Just by chance, is the router on top of a home built or kit built PC or other electronics?

(Thinking unshielded...)

Or, do you or your family have high-powered radio hobbies, like a big shortwave or CB with a large antenna?

Are you under a cell tower or power line?

Do you or your neighbor have an NSA or DoD safe room with communications installed?

Have aliens recently visited you? (j/k)

It is too rhythmic to be random.

What brand and model modem is it?

I have a NETGEAR WPN824v2 and a Cisco WRT54G2 (2 of them). Again, direct-injected from Time Warner Cable router works like a dream. When ANY of the three wireless modems are inserted in the path, the connection drops regularly. The dropped connection is dispayed on the TWC modem.

Not really tech saavy on my end. Anything you can recommend is appreciated. Thank you.

Cable router and wireless router were under my desk. They have since been moved to the surface work area. No heat issues, I wouldn't think. No other weird stuff going on. Cell tower about 1/2 mile from house, though. All other utilities are underground.

The only alien living with us, (my 18 y.o. son) left for college back in September!

Maybe you need one of those meters they had in Ghost Busters.

Okay, so...

You have a TimeWarner box that feeds your internet through a cable to your computer. That works fine.

You connect a wireless router to the TW box and your wired connection drops, or just the wireless connection? When you connect the wireless router, are you disconnecting the Ethernet cable from the TW box to the computer?

Do the simplest things first:

1.) Turn the TW box off, turn the router off, turn your computer off. Disconnect the cable from the TW box to the computer. Wait about 5 minutes.

2.) Connect the wireless router to the TW box from any of the connections on the TW box (1,2,3,4) to the wireless router. Make sure you connect it to the correct port.

3.) Turn on the TW box, and wait for it to completely turn on.

4.) Turn on the wireless router and let it completely turn on.

5.) Turn on the computer.

Now see if you can connect to the wireless. Of course you'll probably have to go through whatever steps necessary to connect, like putting in a password for the wireless router and whatnot.

I don't think a PKE meter would work. He hasn't said anything about demon dogs, books flying off shelves, or StaPuft running around. At least not yet...
