Shooting sled dog race - any tips?

Title says it all!

this will be my first attempt at photographing this type of event so i'd like to make the best out of it all! in terms of equipment that i already have, i'll be borrowing a 300 2.8 too.

Well, you will be challenged by DOF issues as dog sleds are long. The length may also limit how much of a sled you can capture without a super wide angle. It may be best to focus on the lead dogs with rest and the driver blurred and/or the driver with the dogs blurred. It will be a challenge, but hey, thats the fun. And don't carry any pork chops in your pockets.

I haven't shot sledding, but the shots most memorable for me always include some scenery. Backgrounds can be very busy with people, equipment, structures, etc, and much better with a mountain or forest. I also agree with Don, resist the temptation to shoot it all at f2.8 just "because I can".
