I have been looking at Crumpler 6 and 7 mdh, Domke F2, and the Retrospective 20.

I have a stealthy shoulder bag (messenger style) I can carry my 5D mark II with 24-105, 24-70, or a 70-200 mounted with one of the others inside as well…. with a flash and regular little incidentals.

I need a bag for my 1D mark III with same setup and maybe another lens like a shorter prime (85 1.8 for example) Anyone got some advice? I would like it stealthy, fairly weather resistant, etc...

I have perused the stickied thread with bag reviews, but a lot of the links in the range I am looking have dead pictures- does't help me much. I have also been on cambags.com ( great site for bag reviews if you've never been).

I want some first hand help with guys or gals with larger cameras like the 1D series or gripped 5d and the like with a couple lenses.

Ideas?

Thanks

I have what's in my signature below and I use a Thinktank Retrospective 30 for everyday use and then my Thinktank Streetwalker HD when I want to load up all my gear.

I love both bags, they are fantastic!

You can check out my preview of the Retrospective 30 - http://blog.soskiphoto.com …oto-retrospective-30.html (external link)

If you want to mount the body on the 70-200 with the hood ready to shoot, you'll probably want the Retro 20 though (as you mentioned in the original post).

I had the Domke F-2 and much prefer the Retrospective 30 over it. I like the layout and small features like rain cover, pen organizer, etc. more. I never found the Domke strap comfortable, even with the added postal pad. The TT strap is a little stiff at first, but once its broken in, its amazing.

I have the 7MDH and can fit my 5D2 gripped with my 35L attached (no hood) plus 4 additional lenses and a bunch of filters in a pouch sits under the grip of the camera. It'll hold one of your cameras with all your lenses (you mentioned the 24-105, 24-70, 70-200, 85mm, and flash). Front pocket would be able to hold all the miscellaneous stuff easily albeit in a very disorganized way. Depending on your color scheme (and how you yourself look), it can look like an overly stuffed bag full of books or a giant diaper bag - it isn't small.

I agree with you, Think Tank makes some killer gear.

I'm nervous about the 30 with a 1D series and a mounted 70-200. I believe the 20 is a deeper bag, but an inch or so narrower.

I've looked at another post just around mine regarding the fStop Ando. Interesting bag.

Yes I will admit with my 70-200 mounted + 5DII + BG the cover doesn't flap over as well as I would like, even with hood reversed.

With the Retro 30 you would need to turn the camera on its size laying over the top. Not really ideal but it works. They are great bags, I have the 5, 10 and 30.

I'm leaning toward the 20. Any of y'all ever see or get to try out the fstop ando? Fstop good? The nod looks like a littlevkffernt version of the retro, but has zipper top. Here's a link (external link)

F-Stop makes some amazing backpacks. The Ando is just a glorified ICU, I would't bother.

Just to post these OD specs (W x H x D)

Retrospective 20: 13 x 12.5 x 7
Retrospective 30: 16 x 10.5 x 7

Here are a few quick photos of my gripped 7D + 70-200 f/2.8 IS in the Retrospective 30.

Sitting inside (I usually set the 70-200 with the hood ready to shoot - No body attached on the front edge of the bag, not the center):

70-200 with hood reversed height:

70-200 with hood ready to shoot (this way won't work with the Retrospective 30). You can also see how much the 70-200 with the hood on will stick out of the bag without a body attached. IMO, the lid closes just enough to work out of while I'm shooting. Because of this, I'd rather have more width than height.

Thanks, I had actually gone to their website before and again right before you posted those. The 20 is two inches taller and three inches narrower. That would allow for the mounted 70-200 on a 1d to sit below top level. Thanks for the pics. You guys sure are being helpful to me.

Ok....Don't think I will go with the Retro 30 because it is too short for a 1d and a 70-200 to stand vertically and close completely (with camera under rim of bag).

So, the 1dMarkIII with 70-200 2.8 IS II mounted is 11.1" long with hood reversed. The 1dMarkIII is 6.2" tall.

The Retro 20 is 12.5" tall
The Retro 30 is 10.5" tall (too short for mounted 70-200 on pro body)
The Ando 18 is 11.8" tall.
The 7MDH is 11" tall. (just too short for mounted 70-200 on pro body)

The Retro 20 is 7" deep
The Retro 30 is 7" deep
The Ando 18 is 6.3" deep (just big enough for pro body)
The 7MDH is 8.27" deep.

Of course all that changes if I stow 70-200 and keep standard zoom on camera.

Crumpler bags look like they have a whole lot of padding...which really isn't bad, but can hamper actually usable room.

Ando bag has a zippered top (I like that).

So, I think I am torn between the 7mdh and the Retro 20. I believe the Ando is a great bag, but it is relatively long at 16.9".

Now, I have to decide. Thanks for the help......
