Jay, I haven't been following long enough to know how or why you get to shoot at the range (if you've even publicly mentioned) but I am curious if any of the pilots know you do so or are aware of your pictures. As a UH-60 crew in the Army, I know we would all be impressed and interested if there were some action shots of us 'at work' around.
Awesome series so far!
Thanks very much...
Contact between Military Pilots and Photographers is a funny thing...
A lot of it depends on how the access was granted and your reason for shooting. So called "Photo Calls" where you're on base or at a facility with a group usually means you'll be under strict orders to deal only with Public Affairs and are told to not try and reach out to the pilots or their squadrons directly without fear of "excommunication" (ie, not get invited back.)
If you're there as a solo act on a clear cut editorial shoot, you can often harvest cards from squadron folks (operations and wing command) and begin to develop a more personal relationship.
Under the former scenario, you'll usually deal with the same person for quite some time since they have an "office job" (and are sometimes civilian employees or contractors) but under the latter, the pilot or wingie you meet today may get deployed or re-assigned tomorrow and well, there goes your contact(s).
At the Goldwater Range, we're usually told to deal with the PAO office at Luke AFB but this particular day, the lead pilot of an early pair of A-10s actually called the range tower to pass his email address along and to ask for direct contact.
So the absolute answer is that it depends...!
I had the privilege to see some runs on these magnificent aircraft and to hear them unload their gun is one of the sexiest sounds you can get from a machine.
