I have always regarded this as one of those one-in-a-million shots of a train I've nailed over the years. The lighting is great, the angle is pretty decent considering it's almost a side profile and it's going +/- 60mph, sky is blue, the only thing I can find wrong with this shot is the CA and hellacious corner sharpness (or lack thereof) of the 18-270 Tammy I used to get it. Is it just me?

...and hellacious corner sharpness (or lack thereof) .

You shot that at f/3.5 & most lenses are sharpest about 2-3X (f-stops) stopped down from wide open. After that, diffraction will start to degrade the image as you get up toward f/16.

As for sharpness, all images need some, both on the original & after each resizing for different purposes, & be aware that not every part of an image should always be sharpened the same amount.
There are a dozen ways to do it, depending on the image you're working with. You should get to know at least 3 of them, & the "Sticky"s will help. One quick & dirty method + some links: Selection for sharpening illustration.

yeah I know it's wide open I was trying to get ISO 100 and 1/2500th second. Next time I try this will do 400 and f8

I shoot trains all the time, and even a train rolling along at 60mph can be stopped quite nicely a 1/800 to 1/1000 shutter speed. That will give you and extra stop or two that you can use to close down your f stop a little. In bright, cloudless sunlight like you have in your picture with a train at track speed, I would most likely be at 1/800, f8, and ISO 125, give or take a little.

But watch out, shooting trains can be terribly addicting! ;)

Yeppers they got them in 2007 and they see regular service here. The red white and blue ones were EMD demo units and FEC bought them up and re-sprayed them.

yep it is. I actually have a scanner and ATCS software so I can see where the trains are and not have to wait 3 hours for one. The next chance at this will be on the 5d and 24-105/4L IS sometime later this month. The FF sensor and the f4 sharpness should get me a little faster shutter speed than I would normally use. I can do ISO400 on that 5d and it looks like 100 on the Rebel

Corner sharpness really isn't an issue with this shot. Nothing that really adds anything to the image and the subject looks reasonably sharp. A little more breathing room in front of the lead engine would be nice, but I would certainly add a shot like that to my gallery.
