World Cup

So I'm going to the World Cup Aerials tonight and thought I'd give some shots a try. I've never done this before and usually do landscapes, so kind of intimidated about trying this. I have a few questions about this and I'll post the video so you can see the conditions I'll be shooting in, so maybe someone can give me some feedback. Mostly settings questions. First off I should be using AI servo, right? Second, using Tv to make sure I have the speed to stop the motion, right? third would be f stop. I guess that's kind of up to me and how much I want in focus? Mostly want everything in focus, so maybe 13-16, but might want the ramps a little out of focus, so maybe 5-8? Lastly, metering for the snow and bright lights? Thanks in advance for the feedback!

While it looks like there will be plenty of light, there won't. So you will have to use the minimal required shutter speed to stop motion, probably around 1/640 or 1/800.

You didn't mention which lens you have but the longer the better. As for F-stop, really depends of your lens. With a 70-200mkII, you could shoot at 200mm and F2.8 without problem. You'll probably be quite far away so subject should be in focus at all time.

So, this is what I'd do. Manual mode, let's say 1/800, F2.8 and the required ISO to expose properly. AI servo, center focus point. Just make sure to correctly track the skier and you'll be fine.

Lastly, have fun!

Don't forget as well to just take test shots on the 1st runner maybe just try 1/1000 off the bat, iso 100, and whatever aperature I would take maybe f8 just to test. And you also have a sports mode on the 60D - but yes the lighting looks fine from where you'll be standing, AI Servo center point if you can and could also try the continuous shooting mode so it's clicking everytime you have your finger on the shutter. >

Good luck though, I had to take test shots before I got it right but it takes maybe 10 mins. trial and error and you're set.

ISO 100, F8.... At night? That's a bad idea Lisa

Oh I did shot some aerials two winters ago. It was day time, full sun. ISO 200, F8, 1/1000.

Thanks David, but that 70-200 is still out a few weeks. The govment needs to gimme back my money and quick like. All I have for this is the 18-135 or the 75-300 Not sure if I should just max out the 135 for IQ or try to use the 300, but get lower IQ? I'm going to try and get as close as possible and get there about a hour and a half early to to get my spot. Should still be fun though just learning.

Well, for my two top shots, I was just at the end of the landing zone. Exif reports 135mm. I wanted to include the jump to give a sense of height.

See that's the other thing I had questions about. Not sure I want to meter only on the skier because when you do and you're to far in on them it just looks like they're flying out of control in the air like that last pic. My ideal shot is to get the ramp and the skier. I'll be lower on the left of the ramp.

If you look at the video at the 15sec. mark, I'm going to try and be right between that ball light and the tower light kind of in the corner on the right hand side of the screen.
