if your body is fullframe, for outdoors? it's perfect. remember some are even using a 200mm for portrait.

5D3 :). Currently I have the Sigma 85 . Great piece of glass but I am a bokeh addict, and the 85L's bokeh is just awesome

you can do two things to make sure you have a nice bokeh aside from shooting wide open. come as close as you can to the subject and make sure the background is also far away from your subject.

if you can afford the 85L why not? it's my dream lens as well. but a friend of mine once said "rely on technique rather than gears".

For those 85 and 135L owners, focal length aside, how do you feel about the two lenses?

you cant ignore focal length, it's a big factor.

the 85 gives a natural portrait look, where the 135 tends to give more model like look. if I'm indoors, the 85L smokes the 135, but outdoors, the 85 cant touch the 135.

Thanks for the input guys. Charlie, what do you mean when you say that the 85 can't touch the 135 outdoors?

I have never tried the Brenizer, this is one shot only, wide open ;)

Thanks! My feeling was one can't get that much of bg blur with a single shot, but my own experience is only with a crop camera, and sensor size does matter here. In fact, the only reason I feel I need to upgrade to FF is because of my 135L :) .

Well, Josh - these two are very different lenses to me. Love both of them, but for maximum isolation I always choose 135L as well as when I'm shooting overactive toddlers/kids because of the much faster AF. Also color wise 85L gives me more dreamy tones whereas 135L is more contrasty and deeper/richer colors. Of course I always play with the colors in post processing, so you cannot go wrong with either. Also I used lots of 200/2.8L when my 135L was stolen and found that I quite like it for the same type of shots. Maybe it's better to give you some examples:
