I am wanting to get my feet wet with studio strobs. These for now will be used at home to take family photos. So i have two questions:

1) I was looking at the elinchrom d-lite 4 kit and it looked like it would be good for me. I want wireless triggers and by the time I priced out triggers seperately this seemed to make more sense. I will be using my garage at least for now for the setup so I was thinking the 400's would be enough power. What are your thoughts?

2) Second question is relating to background supports. Since I will be using my garage I think it is 20x20 and 9.5 feet tall. I have the entire hieght to work with (finished ceiling) the 20 feet or longer if the garage door is opened and about 15 feet from side to side. I have a set of cabinets on one wall and sitting freezer on the other side.

What would be the best/practical setup for stands? Should I mount something to the ceiling to save space or is that not really necessary? I have 3 lenses that I would use 24, 24-70 and 85L, I maybe getting the 50L at some point so that may be an option. Thanks for any info.

Oh one more last question, I see a lot of portraits wide open let's say 1.2 for the 85, but those are mainly outside. What do most of you normally shoot at wide or closed 5.6 or 8? Sorry for all of the questions, but the flash part has elluded me until now.

400WS lights are plenty enough for a small studio space.

As far as backgrounds, what my friend did was just hang the background seamless roll from the ceiling instead of using stands. He has one in his garage and one in a large room his house. No worries about having to setup stands. Just unroll and reroll the paper as necessary.

The aperture you use will depend on what you're trying to accomplish. If you want to capture a beauty type portrait with detail, then you'd probably use something like f/8 just so most of the subject (person) is in focus.

If I'm trying to kill the background, then I'll go thin DoF and shoot f/2.8 or wider. You'll see people shoot really wide-open outside simply because the situation allows for it (e.g. backgrounds that look really nice when bokeh'ed out). Just note that if you want to shoot wide-open outdoors in daylight with strobes that require you to stay at or under sync speed, you'll want to get a ND filter (preferably a Vari-ND).
