Juiced Link makes an external preamp that gets around the AGC problem by injecting noise into one channel that forces the AGC circuit to its lowest setting, which in turn, more or less bypasses the on-board preamp. Then you can add clean gain using the external preamp. Cons are, however, that it's not for those on a budget ($400 just for the preamp) and that you lose one channel of audio.

As mentioned before using an external audio recorder and syncing later is one of the more effective ways to get good audio with your DSLR. The options do scale with how big your budget is as well.

Thanks Joe, I know all that. I'm not going to waste the $400 on the silly JuicedLink box just to have 1 channel of audio. I have a DR-100 recorder as well as about $40K in audio recording gear, mics, wireless sytems, boom poles and enough cables to choke out a horse. I do audio for a living and have worked with the juicedlink box on pro shoots in the past.

I'm just **** here. But your info is true and spot on. Thanks! :D

I figured you'd be more than aware of this info Chas, I posted for the OP's benefit. :)

And you're right, when you think about the Juiced Link is silly in the sense that you could put that money towards something else and get a lot more for your dollar!

Thanks Ben! It was kind of funny. I think if I was to spend $400 on new camera gear I think I'd rather get a new 50mm f1.4 or a 35mm f2 or something like that right now. But probably a new lens for sure. I'm pretty set on audio gear. ;)

How's the 702 treating you? Have you ever sent it in to SD to have it tuned up or repaired?

Also, I'm really drooling over the new Zaxcom Nomad. I'm thinking about selling the 552 and buying the 6 channel version of the Nomad. HOLY FREAKING COW Batman! What a great tool that would be. A 6 channel mixer with Iso records of all channels, plus a mix down record for a total of 8 tracks. All that for $4700. Zaxcom is every bit as good as Sound Devices and the size of the new Nomad is the same as the 552 or slightly bigger. Not a problem with that new bag of mine. It records to SD and CF cards. No wasted space and expense on internal HD or SSD either.

Take a look!

702 has been wonderful so far and just continues to impress me. Im glad I ponied up and spent the money on a high end two channel recorder. That being said, no, I just bought in December and it was brand new from B&H, so its still got a long time to go before Ill consider needing to send it in.

And yes, I know the draw and attractiveness to the Nomads. And believe me the every input has a pre-amp, built in mixer, bang for the buck, wireless Zaxcom features built in and the overall look ARE very tempting. However there still seems to be some bugs they need to work out as I still regularly see different kinds of issues pop up with them over at JWSound. That and sorry, I wanted my recorder when I was ready to buy it, not 4-6 months later. NOTHING is THAT worth waiting for IMO when there is already a top of the line tried ant true product out there like the Sound Devices line. Had I decided in December I was going to go Zaxcom, itd still be waiting and would have had no recorder for the last three months and longer.

I just bought the H2n Zoom. It looks ideal for your application, has a ton of goodies and innovative mid/side mics for ambience. 2ch/4ch surround. It rocks. It is available for ~$160 at Amazon.

Oh, I'm not really ready to sell off my 552 just yet. I think I'll wait about a year or so until Zaxcom works out the bugs of these new recorders. And yes, the SD recorders are Rock Stars. They just simply work and work very well! It's just that they are kind of expensive. I'd love to own a 788T, but that would have to be in addition to my 552 as the 788T is just a recorder. And to get the one I would want with the Solid State Drive, I'd have to pay $6500 for just the recorder. And then I'd have to spend about a Grand more to get the much needed CL-8 mixer consol for the 788T. Not really practical for me right now.

The idea of the Nomad seems to answer all those questions, but if it's buggy, then I'll wait. I haven't really researched it too much over at JWSound.net.

I've been hanging out over there more and more because of you. Ha! Thanks. :D

Glad to hear it! i think you have plenty to comment and contribute. Its not a bad place, just a few "snobby" sounding people. But if you structure and think out your questions right, they are more than willing to help.

That being said if you really want the 788T, keep your eyes on the for sale section at JWSound as every once in a while one will pop up, sometimes with the CL-8 usually for around $5500 or so.

But yea as far as the Nomad goes, I certainly wouldnt sink my money into one. IMO they are a first gen unit and have some kinks to work out. I always tend to stick with the more tried and true, and in this case the SD gear just it.
