Hey guys,

I want to try removing the AA filter from my 60D as I only use it for landscape shots.

Are there any good shops that provide this service for the 18MP Canon sensor?

I figure it would serve as a nice backup cam to the 5d3 if I end up buying one.

Thanks!
:D

It would be sweet if they could put a mechanism into the camera which could be toggled for AA and no AA. I think Nikon just recently filed a patent for this?

Well, should you desire to part with $450 the company at http://www.maxmax.com/hot_rod_visible.htm (external link) will remove the filter. Be cautioned that you will likely have MoirĂ© patterns in images, especially with side lighting.

Or buy the Nikon D800e when it comes out. Will cost a few more beer tokens though

I wouldn't remove the AA filter completely, but I would consider adding one from a 30D, for example. I think having a less strong AA filter is a fair compromise than to remove it completely. This would optically blur the image onto the sensor less, so the resulting images would be sharper.

TheAA filters are not easily exchanged from model to model. Canon's only real description of how the AA filters work is in that link too - typically the lithium niobate creates 4 distinct images (2x2) (as opposed to blurring per se, although the loss of resolution is similar) and these are at the corners of a square based on sensel pitch. (the thickness of the LPF layers determines this spacing). Thus the bigger the sensel pitch the further apart the 4 images would be - so if want a "weaker" AA filter, you'd want one from a camera with smaller pixels, rather than bigger pixels. The distance of the AA from the sensor will also have some effect on the "blurring", so a bunch of empirical testing would be needed to end up with a weaker AA!

You are aware, I presume, that many posters read only the first post before they answer and none of the replies posted before theirs :D This is somewhat understandable for multi-page threads but usually why there is repetition.

I really am tempted with that camera, but the lack of swivel screen and 70-200 f4 might be a bit of a compromise.

I will probably buy a second 60D to hold me over until Canon and Nikon show their cards for 2012.
