There is a bit of copy variation with the 100-400. Was it a 2nd hand copy that you bought?

Consider a prime. 300 F/4 IS with TC for a bit more flexibility and IS, 400 F/5.6 for best AF and IQ in this price bracket.

It sounds like the 400mm f/5.6 L is what you're looking for.

Any EF lens will give more reach on a 1.6x crop than on a full frame sensor.

most of the reviews indicate the 100-400 is significantly sharper than the Sigmas 120-400, 150-500, etc.

Furthermore, stop the 150-500 down to F/8 @ 500mm and you'll probably still have a softer result than the 100-400 or 400 F/5.6 with a 1.4x (560mm F/8 wide open). I might've ditched my 400 for a 150-500 if the long end was good enough, but no reviews or chart comparisons put it close.

Perhaps with those lenses, but not with the 50-500 OS. Perhaps that should be an option. Twice, I have tried to go back to the 100-400L, and actually had them in hand next to my 50-500 OS. Each time, the Sigma won out for versatility and overall range/reach. IQ was nearly identical so it was not a point of consideration.

Size and weight are my only issues with the lens, thus why I keep thinking about other options.

Plus that link is comparing the 50-500 non-OS, so perhaps something was improved upon on the newer lens model?

For birding specfically in that price range I would definitely recommend the 400 5.6 L as well. The lack of IS doesn't really matter if you are shooting a moving object above 1/500th shutter speed anyway. The light weight really makes it ideal for tracking. It is not a "versital" lens, but what it does it does the best for the money.

Do a google search and the majority of comparisons show the Canon 100-400 sharper than the Sigma 50-500 OS, On wildlife forums the recommendations are almost always the Canon primes or the 100-400.
Or do a search here on POTN and see the head-to-head resolution comparisons, e,g,
https://photography-on-the.net …t=949494&highlight=50-500

I honestly wish the Sigma 50-500 OS was better, sharper and/or cheaper than Canon !
