I recently received my 2 elinchrom 600rx strobes and I thought that I would also receive the standard reflectors for them but since it didn't come with the kit I am looking to purchase couple of reflectors and am hoping to get some advice as to which to get for mainly portraits and outdoor shoots of couples and families?

Thank you.

Have you seen this thread: https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1126440

I have a couple of sets of the 7" standard reflectors with grids but don't use them for main or fill, just for hair/accent/background lighting. I also have the 10" high-power reflector (or something like that), but again, not really the best choice for portraits, outside or not. I like beauty dishes for outside portrait work. The 22" Kacey BD and Mola Setti are my favorites, and I've also used several different Elinchrom rotalux octas on location for portrait work, from the 27" Deep octa, 39" DO, and even the 74" octabank. So lots of options for your 600RX strobes.

Cameras: 1DX, 1D4, 20D, 10D, S90, G2
Lenses: Canon 10-22mm, 16-35mm f2.8L II, 24-70mm f2.8L, 70-200mm f2.8L IS, 300mm f2.8L IS, 200mm f2L IS, 50mm f1.4, 50mm f1.2L, 85mm f1.2L, 1.4x TC, 2x TC, 500D macro, Zeiss 21mm
Lighting: 580EX, Elinchrom 600 RX's, D-Lite 4's, ABR800, 74" Eli Octa, 100cm/70cm DOs, Photoflex Medium Octa and reflectors, PW's, Lastolite Hilite, Newton Di400CR bracket

Thank you for the link and your explanation. I currently have the lights bare bulb inside my softbox and I was just curious if that was okay? I have seen videos where people would leave their standard reflectors on while using softbox?

I am also trying to light my background and was wondering if using them without any reflector would caue any problems? I am very new to lighting so I am hoping to get a lot of help. I am almost done with my setup and hopefully will post some shots soon.

Elinchrom makes a pretty broad spectrum of Reflectors. I believe it is safe to say the choice of Reflectors is almost as broad as the choice of lighting modifiers (Umbrellas, Softbox, Octa, Strip)...If you are looking to light a background and want to get the light spread evenly there were a number of posts on the subject. The reflector is the Elinchrom Varistar 9.5" Wide angle Reflector.

Most softboxes actually attach to the strobe the same way the reflectors attach to the strobe. So it's one or the other and not both at the same time. I'm wondering now if we're talking about the same thing here with "reflectors." My strobes are bare bulb inside my softboxes. The exception is my Lastolite HiLite, where I do use reflectors on the strobes, and my Lastolite kicker light box. Many softboxes provide multiple layers of diffusion material you can use to change the characteristics of the light. You want a wide spread of light inside the softbox to use as much of the surface area as possible to your advantage. A reflector would defeat the purpose.

Bare bulb strobes for background lighting are probably going to cause a lot of light to spill onto your subject and maybe even cause lens flare. Some sort of modifier is typically used to control the light and make it go where you want on the background. You can use reflectors with or without grids or whatever you like. I often use strip boxes for background lighting when not using my HiLite...and maybe a strobe with gridded reflector for a spot of light directly behind the subject. Just depends on the look you want.
