Ignore the "two" cameras. This lens is softer than all the other lenses ive had, or have, on my 60D. If i didnt have the 5DMKIII (the reason i got the lens) the Tamron would have gone back within about half hour. If i can use a Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS, a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 wide open on it i would expect to be able to get the same results from the 24-70 f/2.8. Even a second hand 18-55IS ive just brought is sharper wide open.
Im not comparing the lenses as such, just expecting then all to be usable wide open.

Try doing the focus test through live view as I detailed. That will eliminate the possibility of the issue being one of focus calibration.

Well as i said the lens is going back today so thats that. Ill try again when i get the replacement.

I have run the moire test a few times with the 5D and all my lenses have seemed to be spot on. I did it with the 60D (even though i cant do anything about it) but only with two lenses, and these were spot on as well. I guess i should have tried with the Tamron but that wouldn't prove anything IMO. Im getting soft shots 100% of the time with that lens and camera combo only.

I would like to buy one if I can get it at the right price.

Going to be watching for more discussion about this lens. I'd like a 24-70/2.8 when I grab the 6D in the coming months but the Canon is too expensive for me. The Tamron seems like a pretty nice alternative, though it's probably not going to be as nice as the 17-55 on my 60D . . . it's pretty hard to resist going all-prime in this range!

Think I'm going to give this lens a try ... it will replace my 24-105L, and if it works as well as I hope I may not need to keep my Sigma 30mm either. Hopefully I get a sharp copy without any of the eccentric behavior seen in some early samples of the lens.

lens sells for 920 from korean retailers on ebay. I am wondering if anyone has any experience in us with these guys, including any import duties/tax.

I saw those listings as well, but I was concerned about (1) no Tamron USA warranty, and (2) cost / trouble of returning the product if you get a dud.

There are a few USA sellers that have the lens for $1099, seems like a fair price to have a (relatively) local fix in case of a problem.
