Honestly, I don't see Canon releasing the new 24-70l without IS. Many people have long waited for it and I think with tamron announcing theirs with vc it would take Way too much business away from Canon.

Too many can't live without the red ring. Canon will continue to bring in nice profits.

We'll see. I hope it isn't as soft as the 28-75 wide open.

hopefully this will put pressure on canon and Nikon to make their own sooner

nikon's 24-70 is fairly recent. i don't think canon and nikon feel prodded by tamron...more like the other way around. tamron makes great glass but their lenses don't focus anything like ring USM. the 24-70L whether it's updated or not is the standard.

Well, guess what? They did (external link). And they want $2300 for it.

And announced two wide angle primes (24 f/2.8 and 28 f/2.8) with IS, exactly where IS is needed the least. I guess because they're slow primes (f/2.8 on a new prime? Really?), they need IS.

Way to go Canon. You sure know what your customers want.

Slight correction - in the press realease I saw the price is $2600. So not only do you pay 50% more and not get IS you also get to buy much more expensive 82mm filters.

Tamron had their act together on their new 70-300...hopefully the same will hold true for this one. Unless you're able to write-off lens purchases as a business expense, I believe many hobbists, regardless of disposable income, will not be able to justify the price of the new 24-70 II....

82mm thread? I can live with that since this one has VC and wont break the bank... If it is as good as the 28-75 with those new features than I am sold.

Yeah I'm intrigued. I love my 28-75 for days and times when you have decent ambiant light. This could fix any issues I have with the IS. If its anywhere near the price of a used 24-70 mk1 then I'll have a tough decision and it would all come down to IQ.

I can promise that this will be a very closely watched lens when it gets released. If it performs like the 17-50 and the 28-75......its going to be a huge hit,,,,,,,even if the focus motor is noisy:p

True. The Tamron USD is smooth and "swooshy". It's an excellent ultrasonic motor.
