Will be there for a business trip. First time. Have 5d, was thinking 35L for low light stuff, either 24-105mm for general or 85mm f1.8 for people shots. Any must see places for photography?

Penang - used to work there. Great place. My favorites were snake temple, butterfly farm, wandering around Georgetown, Jade emperors temple, Kek Lok temple, the 100 foot prone Buddha, batik factory and the botanical gardens. Don't bring food to the gardens, the monkeys are aggressive. I used to stay at the Shangri-La's Rasa Sayang Resort, it's a long ways from the T&A plants I worked in, but was very relaxing. Get someone to drive you over to the mainland, when I was there we had sub-contractors there that I'd visit. It's quite different over there. Spend some time in Singapore too, you're close and might as well spend a day or two there. Don't drive, when I was working there we'd get a driver. It's cheap and much safer. The company I worked for wouldn't let us drive there.
As for camera gear, I'd bring the 24-105. Travel light, you'll have more fun.

Hi
As per rick_reno. I'd also add the spice gardens on the north of the Island.

Cheers

If you have the 5D3 then i think even the 24-70 will be good enough for the evening low lights.

Agreed. A 24-70 mm is sufficient for the penang trip

Penang was nice, good food, very nice folks. Didn't get to shoot much too busy at work.

I have not considered visiting Malasia. I currently live in Japan, and am considering South Korea, Thailand or India. Sorry to hear you didn't get many photos taken.
